Well I got the beast cleaned up today, labeled everything I took off last night, cleaned the garage floor, and organized the bolts and nuts. I also replaced the water neck, t-stat, plugs, and PCV valve. I'm debating pulling the heads off or not tonight. We'll see what I decide tomorrow, I guess...

Have a look. It ain't purty, but it'll do as a sleeper under the hood of a stock Ranger, right?


Everything cleaned up nicely, but I wish I could get rid of the stock rusty heads and block. The tranny appears to be very well maintained, but I'll make that decision when I drop the pan to put a new filter in and install the B&M Shift kit.


I finally got the accessory bracket off, AFTER I pulled the motor. I couldn't get to a lower Power Steering line, so I had to leave it connected until I made myself some clearance for a crescent wrench.


These are the tools I've become so reliant on through this project. The air tools are my favorite by far.

Yes those are labels on each drawer of the tool box. I'm OCD about my garage and tool organization, although these pictures don't represent my philosophy too well.

 

you dropped a nut for you collection... 2nd pic left of the wood under the 5.0...... looking good so far... tried taking a wire brush to the block to clean up some of that rust?

 

I use an angle grinder and a green, red or brown 3M biscuit for cleaning that stuff up. it will look like new.

A few tips for you, put tape across that lower manifold to stop stuff from falling in there. Also, take those plugs out to avoid snapping them off when you install it and put tape over those holes too.

I had the intake manifold covered with the ugly lime green towel in the background of the second pic. I took it off to take the pictures because...well...it's an ugly lime green towel.

I'll be masking-taping the intake ports, exhaust ports, and spark plug holes before dropping the motor in. Right now I have to find a way to plug them while allowing me to clean the areas right around them, to get that rust off.

 

tim, I decided not to do it. Ended up, i bought me another 5.0 stang, so i've kept busy on it. But yours looks like its coming along well. I might oneday do it, when the motor goes out in the truck. As for now, its my DD and my work truck, so its difficult to have it down for so long. I know alot about those motors, so if you have any questions feel free to ask.
