HELP What is this thing?

Sorry if this is not the correct forum for this question but I was hoping for a quick answer. For what this thing is.

The big picture.

Another angle.

I ask because I am trying to run a snorkel and this thing is right in my way. Can I move.

The engine side where the air box should be. You can see the bolts that hold that whachamacallit in place.

That looks like a vac container. It's probably used to open/close the ducts on the heater. You should be able to relocate it, just don't let the hose get crimped.

That's actually a very sensitive bomb. Do not touch it! It is set to go off on the 100,000th start.

HAHAHA

I was thinking that you must not have come across this problem with your snorkel. Travis you talked me out of the full snorkel. I just looked at what would happen if water did happen to go up to my cowl box. This would be some very deep water and would result in my axle breather tubes to be in water as well as most of my cab and all the electrical stuff in my engine. I am not prepared for this to happen until the truck is strictly for mud. Then maybe I willl go with the full snorkel but it just makes sense to go with the sleeper snorkel. Thanks for the help travis. And for the idea.

Thanks to the rest of you for helping me out. Now I just have to figure out where to put this thing.

It is spherical shaped and located under the air filter box on an 03.

I thought I was safe and new what to do.

Guess I will have to give the Police a call.

Well, if the police are as mechanically inclined as they are in my area, I'd see it on the 11 o'clock news =]

It would prolly end up on the news around here as well.

I have moved it but don't have a permanant home for it yet and it is not going to be as easy as I thought to find a home for it. I may be able to just turn it up but I am not sure the fender will fit back on though. The other options are to put it on the back side of the fender well. The area if you are looking at the tire that is on the left. Or to put it in front of the air box. Which happens to be the spot the air comes in when using the stock hole.

You could look into the possibility of using one from a later Ranger. I believe that it is smaller than yours and it fits under the air filter box, bolted to the plastic inner fender. I'm not sure of the changeover date but, for sure, 2001+ has it.
