To get to the point. I hit a puddle last night, it was more of a over flow from and stream. Well my truck bogged out in it. I think water came up from the bottom and got sucked into my intake. :/ when I start my truck it just clicks and that's it. I was told to remove the plugs and turn it over a few times. What eles should I look for or possibly fix. Also I think the battery died too.


Here is the story
I had to drive my friend to her house to check her sub-pump so the basement wouldn't flood. All roads were flooded and I know the a stock ranger and deep water is just not a good idea so I don't go down any roads that have changed into temporary rivers. I pull down a road and I watching for any and all water build up so I don't hydro plain. This road I was on had this pipe along side the curb for whatever the road few was doing. Little did I know that this pipe floats above water so I assume the road didn't dip down and that there wasn't a 2 foot deep newly formed lake on this road. Well there was and I hit it at 25mph and the car slowed down and I gave it gas right about the time the big splash happened. The truck boggled a little and then died :( what I think happened was the intake sucked some water up when I hit because I gave it gas so I wouldn't suck anything in. I checked my oil and it kinda looks a little bit "watery". What should I do?!

 

change all your fluids...pull the spark plugs and crank the motor...and hope you didnt do serious damage

New battery and air filter to start. Pull the plugs crank a few times then install new plugs. If it doesn't fire then start looking into other issues. You may have hydro locked it.

This. Pray to whomever your higher power is (i suggest the Fonz) that it isn't hydro locked.
Check all the fluids. replace your oil for sure.

Ive seen this happen numerous times. Its about a 50/50 chance you ruined the engine. Did it make any noises?

 

It just clicks and I would say every three turn over it will make a winein noise. Almost like the belt is spinning with out the engine starting

I did this to mine pull the plugs and keep trying to start it. Pull the air filter out and clean the maf it's probs disgusting. Mine kept going "click.....click....click" then and fired right up. If it's not doing anything it's most likely locked up.

 

did you pull the plugs? if not every time you try to fire it you are ruining the engine.

Yeah that doesn't really seem like something insurance would cover. Good luck!

 

Not if its something he did. Read your policy over, specifically for something along the lines of "flood coverage"

 

Yeah like Zach said, please pull the plugs before turning it over any more. It may be too late already though. Don't count on insurance to cover it. Hydrolocked engines aren't really something they usually cover.

 

Guys! Haha comon positive thoughts here! The insurance company as of now is covering it. I get my rental today and within the next 8 business days someone is coming to estimate the cost. I hope it all works out

only reason i could see them covering it is that it was actually in the road and was a hazard.

 

I was on the road and there were no signs warning people of this overflow of water otherwise i would have turned around like i did at everyother road that was flooded. I wasn't trying to go threw any water At all, I personally hate taking my truck in water it's to risky IMO.

But as of now it looks good. I'm going to pick up a rental in an hour hopefully I get a full size !!

 

So here is the update as of today.

The ranger was not declared a total loss :)
The ranger will have new carpet and possibly seats :)
The ranger will undergo a full engine examination :/
My buddy is the mechanic and thinks it would be cheaper and he's is gonna recomend a new engine :)

How many miles were on the current motor? i'd also have him pull the door panels and take a look on the inside of the doors. its one of those things that i've always been told to do with flood damaged cars.

 

There are small little square plugs at the bottom of each door. Two plugs to be exact, Pulling the door panel is the best way but to drain remove the plugs.

I sunk my truck up to the windshield. Water was up to the headlight switch. Never had any electrical issues. I pulled the seats and full interior and let them dry for 3 days.

 

Yea, i couldn't remember if there was foam in those doors or not also.
I do know that an Ozone machine and a Dehumidifier will be his best friend for the next month.
