You probably won't be getting it off without destroying it.

Do it when its hot outside or use a heat gun/blow dryer.

I changed mine when it was very cold out and it was one of the hardest things I have ever done.

x2 on destroying the old one. I used a pipe wrench.

Your 99's shift **** hasn't come loose yet on you? Consider yourself lucky. The one on my 01 got so loose, you could slide it off while shifting. I used a HD hot glue to secure it back on.........

I was thinking the exact same thing LOL. The one on my 93 came off in the middle of shifting. Use some Gorilla glue and doubt that thing will ever come off again.

My stock **** on my 97 was all plastic which I was able to get off in one piece, but the stock **** on my 03 had a steel core and I had to completely destroy the thing to get it off.

Just get a big pair of channel locks and grab the base of the **** and twist under the plastic gets a little broken and it should twist by hand and come off
