How to Restore Faded Black Front Bumper w/ Krylon Fusion
Restoring faded black Ranger Bumper
I purchased my 05 ranger at the beginning of May 2022 and one of the first things I wanted to do was fix that faded rusty bumper. The process was relatively simple. It took me about 2.5 hours. Take your time masking and prepping as this is the most important part. I'm probably not driving the Ranger until tomorrow morning to let the paint cure and prevent rock chips from messing up the paint while it's hardening. I've used Krylon Fusion on many projects involving metal and plastic material. It requires very little prep work, adheres to many surfaces, and holds up great!
There are a few threads about this but I wanted to share my experience!
Materials I used: scotchbrite pad, 600 grit sandpaper, tape and drape, acetone, microfiber towel, Krylon Fusion in Satin Black.
Process: 1) Clean bumper with water and soap to get rid of any dirt or debris. 2) Mask off body and fender to prevent overspray. I used tape and drape and regular painters tape. 3) Scuff metal part of bumper with scotchbrite or sandpaper to promote adhesion and knock down any rust spots. 4) Using a microfiber rag wipe entire bumper (plastic portion included) with acetone to remove any remaining oil, wax, and contaminants. 5) Starting light, coat with 50/50 overlap, paint the bumper in sections. I chose to go top to bottom right to left, do whatever works for you.
6) Repeat 4-5 more times and wait at least an hour before removing tape & masking.
Before After Masked and prepped. Waiting for paint to dry.
