I bought the most expensive mod today...

and it is.... LICENSE PLATE...

700 Dollars (tax plus tags)...

They are robbing us! especially people who switch cars all the time. Well I guess it was worth it because I plan on driving this one till the wheels fall off!

:)

He probably had to pay the taxes along with the registration fee. That'll drive the price up there the first time you register a vehicle (atleast it does in Va). I pay $55/yr for renewal....$35 for the plate, $10 for personalized, $10 for the specialized fire dept plate.

My registration here is $72.50, plus tags if your not transferring you old ones. Tags are cheap, but I haven't gotten new one's for years, the last I payed was $3 for the pair when I registered a new truck about 20 years ago.

I believe some states pay sort of a property tax on their vehicles each year. The registration cost depends on the value of the vehicle.
If it were that way here, I'd stick to nothing but old junk.

Does Tennesee work that way?
Do you get charged that amount every year, or is it a one time sales tax like here?

In NJ, the title transfer forms ask the purchase price, you pay state sales tax on that amount plus the cost of tags and registration. The worst part here is insurance, I pay about $1200 for just liability on each personal vehicle and I have a perfect driving record and none of my vehicles are considered high performance. I was always told that when you get older your rates go down, but I've been waiting for that for 20+ years. I can't imagine what a new driver with any points on their licence pays here. Let alone if they drive a high risk vehicle. It's getting to the point here that car insurance and taxes are the reason a lot of people leave this state. It seems it's cheaper everywhere else.
I lived in PA for a while and paid only $200 each there about 5 years ago.

I was in NC for a while and thats the way they explained it to me.
It was a no brainer for me, and it talked me right out a the new truck I was looking at back then.
From what I have seen with most states, if you take the cost of taxes, registration and insurance they all end up pretty close on newer vehicles, but some are far cheaper when you have an older, less valuable vehicle.

Maybe those in various states can chime in with what they pay each year?

Only $38. Would have been $148 but I get the fee waived for being in the military.
