I found a bad rust spot on the inside bottom of my passenger side door. It was bubbling up and flaking off rust and really looked bad. I took a dremmel tool and ground off the loose rust, and then applied two coats of POR 15 rust inhibitor paint to the metal. Then I let it sit over night to harden and then touched it up with some custom mixed touch up paint. I also found a spot about the size of a quarter by my back right side mud flap, I fixed that too. I ground off the rust with the dremmel tool applied the POR 15, and touch up paint.

That POR 15 is nice stuff, it tightened up the surface and got as hard as a rock. A bit pricey at $ 9.00 for a small can, and $16.00 for the touch up paint....so for $25 bucks I've got my truck all buttoned up for winter. So it's worth it and not really that bad. I was able to buff out a few scratches so it's looking good now.

Thanks, Ya here in Ohio they use lot's of salt on the roads that will ruin a car in no time if you don't wash it off. I try to go thru a car wash once a week during the winter months, and it pays off. My 9 year old truck still looks pretty good for it's age. I also try to wax it before and after winter with McGuire's wax, that seems to help. Finding the rust on the inside of the passenger's door was a big surprise to me. I'm glad I caught it before it ruined the whole door.

One of my neighbors has an S-10 that he got about the same time I got mine, he doesn't take car of it and it's a real rust bucket now.

 

i'm prolly going to have to do that on my rear door. I had some work done on it not long after i bought the truck new and I don't know if a drain was blocked and water hung out in the door, but it's getting some nasty rust on the bottom. A new door is too $$ so I might try my luck in refinishing it myself or go to the junkyard for one eventually.

 

Ya new doors are expensive. I had to replace the driver's side door last year after somebody backed into it. The body shop couldn't find a used one and bought a new door for around $6-700, plus they had to paint it to match and transfer all the inside door trimmings and window mechanism. It was quite a project. They did a nice job but it was a lot of expensive work.

 

Got to love the dremel tool! I live in Texas so we don't get the rust problems as northerners do but it is always a good idea to get under the truck every so often and look around.

 

Yup, that dremel tool sure came in handy and did a nice job of removing the rust and bubbled up paint. I did the same to my mother's old Cadillac. She had rust on the bottom of her doors too. So I hit it with the dremel tool, some POR 15, and had some touch up paint custom mixed for her, and now the doors look like new. It only took a few minutes and now she's thrilled !!
