Im in the same boat.....exept I have 177k and I also have a crap load of other problems.
I got quoted at 1700-1300 when talking over the phone with a good trans shop. He said it most likely wouldnt be 1700 unless the trans was completely trashed. You try a different shop? Maby you can get it done cheaper if you buy a used trans and have that swapped in.

Some days wile in drive it will pause for a second between gears like the clutch is being pressed in on a manual, and some times it will slam in to gear as hard as possible. That is drive, Reverse well it most of the time doesnt work when first started but, after its warmed up and been driven a couple miles most the time it works.
What have you guys done to your trucks to kill the trans so fast? Especially you 01 ranger, is yours a manual or auto? I no the manuals (I think) slave cylinder goes out often but that isnt many miles for an auto....

my tranny did what yours doing when it was in the shop they pulled the pan off and from what they could see there was a thick dark black sludge everywhere there was a few burned up parts and a bad solinoid
i probably could have fixed it all myself for under $1000 but my dad doesnt trust me and so i told him if he paid for the replacement then fine plus it came with a 3 year 50k mi warranty

My trans fluid is nasty and burnt also, but I think the past owner took care of the truck until he got a new truck or something then he just beat on it and used it as a beach truck. Its got rust damage from the beach and sand in places you wouldnt think sand could get. I think I do the same stuff he did with it though.

I have 161,300 on mine and it's still kicking (knocks on wood desk), especially with how hard I pound on it.
Ford's weak spots have always been their electrical and transmissions. I got 257,000 outta my 93 Bronco's transmission and it was the old outdated version of the E4OD with a weaker torque converter and internal componants.
If ya take care of it, check the fluid regularly and get to know the transmission, it'll last ya.
I will add this, I'm worried about my transmission simply because of my milage and how hard I am on the truck.
