Got my last 2 Cats deleted! Took a video of it!

I finally found a shop that would take off my last 2 Cats. I originally went there to get some cracks in my exhaust fixed and they said they could take off my cats if I would like them to! Got everything done for $60. Awesome deal and great work. I don't even throw a CEL. And I'm getting alot better mpg to which makes it basically a free mod since I'll make my money back haha. Anyways on to the Vid. A stupid plane was flying over of course during it so its kinda hard to hear but the tone is alot deeper and has a nice deep idle.

Thanks Jake! Agreed, yeah getting rid of those cats def. Freed up some power. Yeah yours is much deeper Dave. Sounds really good! My Gibson exhaust has dinky little 1.75" tailpipes so that's not helping. Once my muffler goes I'm getting a 40 series with bigger tailpipes which will sound much better than my current setup.

Rangers come from the factory with high flow cats as stock. Removing them won't help.
That has already been proven on a dyno if you cared to search the forum.

But removing the last 2 could have helped his mileage. Maybe he is seeing improvements. Maybe those cats that were removed were starting to gum up some. There are alot of factors in this. Has anybody else driven his truck? That 4 cat setup was the dumbest thing the newer rangers only have 2.

You can't compare one Ranger's outcome on a Dyno and expect it to be the same with all the others.

Removeing the cats improves MPG because you are no longer having to rev the engine to make your muffler louder.

You removed your cats, congrats you are polluting more.

If I was polluting more, I do believe that my O2 sensor would notice it and throw a CEL. But since it hasn't, deleting my Cats must have not caused any additional pollution.

Hmm... well's let's see. Here's what Wiki has to say about "Cats".

The type of chemical reaction varies depending upon the type of catalyst installed, for example current North American gasoline powered Light Duty Vehicles are fitted with a Three-way Catalytic Converter which reduces carbon monoxide(CO), unburned hydrocarbons(HC), and oxides of nitrogen(NO, NO2, & N2O) to produce carbon dioxide(CO2), nitrogen(N2), and water(H2O).[1]
Sure seems like removing them wouldn't help anything create less pollution. But anyway, it's your truck, if you want to run it without, be my guest. But saying that removing your cats doesn't cause more pollution just seems like an ignorant statement.

Yes, JP may come off as a brash know-it-all, but if you read his posts, a lot of them have great technical know-how. He may not have the best ways to say it, but he does know what he's talking about. Least from what I've read.

I never said create less...I said additional meaning more. That O2 sensor is there for a reason and if its not throwing any codes there must be no change...

No, you just don't understand how your o2 sensors work. Sensors are only transducers that translate some physical phenomena into a voltage which can be logged.

The rear hego's generate a voltage based on if the sensor notices a lean or rich condition. narrow band hego's don't understand stoich, only lean or rich. Each time your sensor reads lean, then rich, a switch is recorded. (same for rich, then lean)

The number of switches from the rear sensors is recorded in memory, and compared to the number of switches as seen from the front hego's (which are also narrow band's in our trucks). (# of rear switches / number of front switches) The number is always less than 1. The lower the coefficient, the more efficient the catalyst is working. When this number begins to rise to a certain threshhold the ecu will throw a cel and code.

Oxygen sensors, aren't like people. They don't get teary-eyed when they smell more pollution. Not to mention, oxygen sensors like the ones on your truck only measure the oxygen content, not other harmful gases that come from combustion.

Like I say over and over, people who don't understand how something works, should not modify it. Same reason I don't open the back of my TV set and go re-arranging wires at my will.

Frequently I go into the rom, and rewrite the obd2 logic to allow this coefficient to be 1 without throwing a cel. That's because I tune race cars for a living.

And the only high-horse I ride is high horsepower.

Not doubting that, he's a great contribution to this site. But his manor in which he talks to some people about things, is laughable. Carry on!
