When I am driving and hit small bumps in the road I hear a little knock behind my steering wheel/dash. Anyone else have this problem. I took apart my lower dash but cant find it since it only makes the sound when I am driving. It doesnt happen when I turn the wheel only on small bumps in the road. I cant replicate it just sitting there. It isnt that loud but is driving me nuts.

yeah i have a noise behind my dash too. I cant seem to figure out what it is I also have taken apart my dash found nothing. im going to have to try it again im sure something just rattled loose

 

check the joints in the steering shafts. it has a universal joint set up and they wear out alot.

 

another thing to check is the sway bar links. they have a tendency to stretch and snap and the noise could be vibrating through the frame or body.

 

hrm, i wonder if the newer rangers have a weight behind the airbag.

i know some cars/trucks do and the weight falls off and makes noises.

 

I messed around with the steering linkage and found no play in it. It sounds like it is right behind the steering wheel. I have tilt steering. But everything feels tight. My truck only has 43000 miles. Seems early for anything to wear out.

 

plus it happens if i am only going like 2 mph. Just a slight knock.

 

The same thing happens in my 07. Dealer replaced my tie rod ends and no change. I was thinking steering shaft joints too, but can't find any play. I've got tilt steering as well, and only 24000 km.

 

yes. It is definitaly in the sttering area somewhere. Otherwise someone would be able to hear it outside as well. Slowly seems to be getting worse. Not louder. Just more often.

 

It happens to me too sometimes like pulling out of the driveway but not all the time.

 

actually....this isnt in the steering at all, where it happen is just convienent, what is happening is when u hear the pop, the truck is flexing ever so slightly and the nutserts that hold the dash in the truck are known for working there way partially free, when the truck flexs very slightly u will hear it, most 3rd gen or newer rangers ive ever been in do it....

 

To fix the problem, just let the midget out of the glove box.

 

I actually did that but then the midget came back and kicked me in the nuts.

 

Basically No way to solve this. Just play the stereo louder. I do feel it a lot in the steering wheel, but whatever. As long as the truck is fine. Just add it to the list of things in this world that drive me nuts.

 

And thats when you stuffed him back under the dash? Well theres your problem.

I usually find a pet carrier helps to restrain them after removing them from the dash. And remeber, spay and neuter your midgets!
