cold weather causing harsh startup

Is that normal? I live in san diego and have started noticing the past few days when its cold out in the morning, like today 43 degrees, my truck had a hard time getting started...normally i turn the key and it starts right away..today it turned a few times and then started..it never use to do that? does it have anything to do with the anti freeze?..I dont think ive ever checked it.

Coolant shouldn't have anything to do with it, however, you are getting close to needing a flush and fill I would say. My first guess would be fuel filter (was it ever changed) or plugs....

I'd DEFINITELY change the fuel filter. What viscosity/type oil are you using?

Ronnie, I am sure that you are aware that bosch plugs aren't recommended for our trucks. Change your fuel filter and put motorcraft plugs in and you should be fine.

I am using 10W-30 valvoline max life for engines over 75k miles..so you think that would be a fuel filter problem? Cold weather makes it act different?

Your motor is recommended to run 5w-30 or even 5w-20, the oil you have is too thick IMO... My girlfriends taurus has the exact same motor as your truck, and I run 5-20 with no issues at all...

Standard Ford replacement plugs. The fuel filter is in the frame rail on the drivers side of the truck. You need the special tool to remove it (just a few bucks) and its 3 hoses. Not hard at all...

Pepboys should have the fuel filter. As for the oil, 10-30 is ok to run when its hot (80-90's) but if its in the 40's I would say 5-30 would be better...

I believe that your engine calls for 5w-20, thats what you should run. Heavier oils are thicker at startup

Im not worried about it starting hard..It is hard for it to start. I know its not normal which is why I posted. Maybe the 4.0 can run thicker oil. Plus everyone is saying my plugs might be the problem. Im not crazy either it only does it when its cold.

One thing that really effects vehicle starting is your battery, even in Calif. Your battery is 12 volts with so many cold cranking amps, if your battery is getting up in years, this may be why it takes a liitle more to start the engine. Have your battery tested.

I just bought a new battery a couple months ago because it finally died hah. And my 2 amps and subs arn't helping it much...but anyway, I ordered a new fuel filter from kragen. I pick it up tomorrow. As for the spark plugs I went to kragen and pepboys. I didnt know this, but you have to buy motorcraft plugs directly from ford so the guy said at the store. Im sure they are online somewhere. Any links?

What he said. That ain't cold. That is crisp.

If you are abusing your electrical system it is more likely your battery.
