Hey R-F!

I don't usually post here since I rarely have issues with my Ranger (which is good).

I personally own an 02 5-speed, 4.0, 4wd, XLT/FX4 package. It's my baby and I take superb care of it :-)

Now, in the near future, I may very well be acquiring a 93 XLT, similarly optioned but it's a 3.0 auto. That's not the point.

The thing is I want it to be a truck that I can just get in and "drive" when I'm pissed off or want to drive places other than asphalt.

Problem: Even thought the truck will be a rock bottom price, it's need WORK! I mean lots of work!

It barely runs, leaks oil, electrical problems, virtually NO brakes, exhaust needs some work, rear suspension is hanging in there (no pun intended) but needs some love, the part of the frame just behind the license plate has completely rusted away (I know this because I've had the bed off at one point). Oddly enough, the interior is in near excellent shape. The body is actually about 95% ok, which surprises me for NEPA winters.

Well, with all of it's maledictions, I just need it running. Nothing fancy, no mods, no upgrades, no frills. But, here's the catch: I will only have the sum of my tax return to keep this beast on the road. Let's say that's $1300 (and that's being generous).

I can get a lot of what I need from the junkyard, except brakes. Always buy that stuff brand new.

Guess I'm asking if this community thinks it can be done? It's a lot of work, I know, but this truck also holds sentimental value.

So, fix 'er up and keep it on the road, or junk it and start over?

Never saw this thread before... if you can do the work yourself it should be able to be done! If there's a few Rangers in your local junkyard... even better! Brakes aren't that expensive... if it barely runs it may just need a tune up. Parts are cheap for these trucks so I'd say it's possible!

 

Ahh yes forgot to mention that. Yeah all the work will be done by me, except for the alignment (after it gets new tie rod ends and ball joints).

I appreciate your input, there, Fullscale, but my original request still stands.
