Missing front left gap guard?

OK, I was washing the truck Saturday, and here I was spraying inside the right front wheel-well, washing out all the accumulated dirt and crap. Few minutes later, I'm doing the lather, rinse, repeat thing on the left front. Huh, says I, is something missing here? Comparing the left to the right, I figure out the gap guard is missing on the left front.

So then I start thinking, when in the hell did I lose this? Have I ever seen one in there? Hell, I don't know.

Figuring it'd be easiest to just order one from the $tealership, I called up this morning, and the parts guy tells me the book only shows one for the right side, and not the left.

So do these trucks not come with a left front splash / gap guard?

Can someone with a late 2000's 4X4 run out and take a look and verify this for me?

Thanks!

Yeah the newer ones don't have the both sides any more. My 98 did, I forget when they stopped making them.

I think it's called a "vent valve" because the picture is wrong. "Splash shield" is what you want.

Way back when, I tried to order the earlier, full-length LH splash shield for my 2003 but when it came in, it was the same useless 1/4-length part that came on my truck from the factory. The old part number for the long one used from about 1998~2002 has been superceded to the short one used on my 2003. [Later (2005~2010?), the driver side shield has been eliminated entirely.]

The way to get a long shield for the driver side is to order the PASSENGER side shield and then turn the retention pins around. The PS rubber part is exactly the same as the old full-length DS part. So, the PS shield will fit both sides of 98+ Rangers - just change the push pin orientation.

PS Splash Shield part number: F87Z-16102-AA
Dealer retail: $20.88
Tasca Online: $13.78

Yes, order the PS part number I posted, reverse the pins and it will plug right into your 98+ DS inner fender.

Even better, especially if you have big and/or aggressive off-road tires:

It helps tremendously to install both of the full-length rubber splash shields on the inside of the plastic inner fenders instead of the outside like they are from the factory. That way, they don't get ripped off by the tires as easily when offroading.

This can be accomplished by either reversing the push pins or by swapping the shields left for right. You will probably need to repunch the rear two holes in the rubber to get everything to line up - easy.

This simple mod gives extra clearance and, just as importantly, hides the prominent top edge that the tires like to grab hold of while turning.

Here is the remounted shield. At the top of the photo, you can see the "witness mark" on the inner fender where the splash shield used to be on the outside:

This view shows the inside of the inner fender with the reversed push pins and the repunched holes. (You don't need to pull the inner fenders to reverse the shields. I took this picture later when I was installing headers and had the inner fenders off for access):

Thanks, Bob. I appreciate the thorough answer. I plan on taking your advice and getting the part specified from Tasca.
