need help. cant figure it out.

So my truck started sputtering and miss firing. So I changed the plugs the wires which all needed to be done any way. But its till doing it. I idols like crap. It allways has had a rough idol but not like this. when rev it up it sputters till it hits the governer At 3200 rpms. so i let it sit for a night. the next morning started it up same problem. But now when i hold the brake in drive and stomp on the gas it wont go over 2 grand. i put a timing light on it and everything is cool. IT acts like something with my governer chip is all crazy and is kicking in. IT never did this before. I can't figure it out. I have done a lot of stuff to the truck latley. oil, plugs, fuel filter, gears. it was fine untill a few days ago it just started doing it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I need my truck to go on trips for the holidays and i dont have money to go drop it off at ford

well - what year is it?
manual or auto
why would you keep your foot on the brake in gear and 'stomp on the gas'

buy a can of electronic parts cleaner and clean your MAF (I use a CRC product)
disconnect your battery before removing the MAF, this will clear the computer
don't touch the MAF wire and make sure it air dries before you reinstall it
if that does not solve it you might have a bad intake module, also quick fix/replacement

Check fuel lines? Fuel and Air Filters? Could be clogged up.

well from what you are posting it sounds to me like the ignition coil. is the computer giving out any codes? i had a problem like this and the computer was giving a misfire code so i checked the wires and plugs - good...then i checked the coil - bad. i went to ford to get a replacement and they told me that they had replaced 4 ignition coils in the past few days...and they were all 2001 4 cylinder. you didnt mention what motor you had so im not going to make any assumptions what motor you have but i would check the iginition coil.

Possibly you have water in your gas? I see you are in California, so it might be hard to find "drygas". That might solve the problem, and it's a cheap idea...

If you filled up when the gas station was low, you may have pumped water into your tank. Water gets into fuel tanks all the time at stations, but they normally get it drained off, or just don't run their tanks that low...

Make sure you update us with the cause when you find out, so if it ever happens to us, we know where to start....

its odd because when you give it gas it starts to sputter and then tarts to mis fire. no check engine light. Replaced fuel filter. the iac is new. new spark plugs. It ran great for a few days after i put the plugs in. Its odd it goes between sounding like a huge exaust leak to a miss fire. but lets say you hold the throtle at 2000 or 3000 straigt it wont miss fire. when you put a timing light on it, it looks fine. ITs when i try to acelerate or rev it real quick. this is pissing me off. the stereo shop that installed my alarm and stereo ****ed up the thing where you can plug the computer in to check for codes. It seems like if it where something like an injector or something big the check engine light would come on. what else could it be that im not looking at

If it were an old car, I would say you got something in the distributor cap, like water or something. Since it's a newer truck, I would have to agree with Justin above, check the coil packs...

Or water in the fuel

thats exactly what my truck was doing, so now im about 90% sure that it is your ignition coil. check the coil and make sure its giving spark to all cylinders. the reason why it seems fine when you keep the thorttle steady is because the cylinder(s) that are not firing are being pushed by the others. and when you try to quickly rev or accelerate its bogging because the other cylinders have to push the ones that arent firing causing an extreme loss in power. and if its not the coil pack then it would an injector.

Another thing it might be is your plug to your MAF. I know mine came off somehow once and it took me about 3 days to figure out why my truck was running like poo. Felt pretty stupid after I found out too. lol

Sounds like ignition coil to me. My '01 Windstar had similar problems. I thought it was a bad plug wire since I did a resitance check and found two way off the scale. Turns out the coil went bad and fragged the wires.
