New guy to rangers
New guy to rangers
hey everyone just got a few questions. I’m picking up a new to me 2001 Supercab with the 3.0 in it on Sunday for a steal at $450. However, as of right now it supposedly needs the key reprogrammed for it to start. I know that has to do with the PATS and I’ve already got a plan together and getting the programming done free. My main question is what are some other things that you ranger pros would recommend checking out in the mean time.
Future plans are to go 4/5 drop which is going to replace the upper and lower control arms and ball joints. I have been tossing the idea around of just going ahead and starting with the fuel delivery system and putting all new components in just to bring them to new and get as much life as I can out of my project.
What else would you all recommend checking out. Thanks in advance for any advice.
oh yea I’m medically retired from the military so I have a lot of time to tinker with this thing.

Welcome to the forum
PATS(passive anti-theft system) was added to V6 Rangers in 1999, it disables Fuel pump power and fuel injectors in the computer if correct ID number from key is not matched, disables starter motor as well on some years
PATS keys have an RFID tag in the handle, it requires no batteries, there is a Wand(transceiver) around the key slot, when key is turned on the Wand sends out an RF burst which powers the RFID tag, the wand reads the tags unique number then sends it off to PATS Module or computer with PATS module built-in
PATS can hold 6 to 8 numbers(there are usually only 3 or 4 in there from the Factory), and new ones can be added as well, the older ones are deleted if memory is full
If there is a numbers match then computer is allowed to start fuel pump and injector pulses, if no match then no fuel, from pump or injectors
PATS uses RSA encryption, this means the "OK to start" code changes each time key is turned on, so an old OK only works that one time
There is no bypass for the PATS setup, wouldn't be much of an anti-theft system if there was, lol
Most mobile locksmiths will have laptops now with PATS software, they can cut PATS key(s) for the lock and then add the keys to the PATS memory, this can only be done in the vehicle.
Ford can do the same but you have to tow it to their location.
Since you can't start the vehicle its a bit of a "pig in a poke" but for $450 worst case would be parts vehicle, assuming its not to rusted out or damaged.
3.0l Vulcan engine was reliable, under powered but reliable
Manual transmission Rangers were no problem, if its an automatic then expect it to have been abused and in need of servicing if not a rebuild or swap out.
2001 wasn't a major change year for the 3.0l 2WD models
In 1998 Rangers all started using 60psi fuel pressure, Returnless systems, 1997 and older used 30psi
In 1999 Rangers started using 2 wire Cam Sensors, and V6 models got PATS
Ranger chassis were long lasting if rust was kept at a minimum

Common for coolant leaks where the timing chain cover bolts onto the block.
Oil pan gasket leaks which pretty much requires pulling the engine to fix.
Spring shackles rust out in that area, but you're far enough South, so that may not be a problem _ you can do a quick visual check though.
If you install a new fuel pump, use Ford Motor Craft one, it will last longer then the aftermarket ones.
For 450 bucks, maybe the trans is shot ???
If it's a manual, the you should be OK, assuming no one abused it.

So from what the old man told me the truck will crank but not start. And he says that he did have it started long enough to run the transmission through the gears just fine. There’s no major visual damage but I won’t really know till Sunday. I figured at $450 why not just go for it. I can probably part it out for more than that so it’s a gamble I’m willing to take.
PATS vehicles will have a THEFT light on the dash, it flashes every 5-10seconds when key is out
When you turn the key on THEFT light will come on and then go off, if light flashes rapidly it means a problem with PATS, wrong key or it couldn't read the key
If there is no THEFT light then bulb is burned out
If THEFT light works and doesn't flash rapidly, then could be fuel pump has failed
IF PATS is OK then you can hear the fuel pump in the gas tank run for 2 seconds when key is turned on, it only runs for 2 seconds to Prime the system, but it does this EACH TIME key is turned from off to on
It is not quiet, you can hear it in the cab, a "click and HUMMMMM", then off
2001 PATS "should" have Starter Motor disable relay, so if it cranks then may not be a PATS issue at all
2000 Rangers did not have the starter disable
All 2002 did have it, so 2001 was transition year, which is why I have "should" above, lol.
You can download 2001 Owners manual from here: https://www.ranger-forums.com/genera...1-models-3747/
Probably shows where THEFT light should be on the dash

Once I get to the truck I will definitely know more. If I rotate the key and see no theft light flashing rapidly then the first thing after that I’m checking will be the inertia switch on the pass side. Like I said it’s an old man who has it and he just recently had a stroke and said he doesn’t want to fool with it anymore and just wanted to try and get the money he had in it back. My father in law has all the software to program new keys for the PATS if that is what it is just for some reason I’m feeling like it might not be that. I will definitely update once I know more.
