New key for my 2006 FX4
Hey y'all,
I own a 2006 Ranger FX4 and I need a new key and fob I would like to get one of the newer Ford truck keys. The one that has the remote integrated into the key. I've been doing research and because I have the plastic collar around my ignition I can't just buy one and program it and have it work. Does anyone know if there is a way I can remove the collar and get the new key to work?

Welcome to the forum
2006 has PATS(passive anti-theft system) so each PATS key has an embedded RFID tag in its handle, any new key needs to have that and it's tag number needs to be added to PATS system before it will work.
Most locksmiths can cut the new key to match your doors and ignition, and then added it to your PATS system via laptop computer
This has to be done regardless of the "style" of the key
If you currently have two working PATS keys for the vehicle then you can add a 3rd or 4th PATS key yourself, but it still needs to be cut to match doors and ignition.
Locksmiths can also "Clone" a workings PATS key, so no adding new key is needed.
They cut a "blank" PATS key to match existing key, then they "read" the working PATS key to get its Tag Number, they then program the New "blank" key with the same number
So you have a "clone" of the working key, this doesn't qualify as a "second" working key because PATS only sees it as 1 key, same tag number.
But it is a spare working key
I assume you mean the Ford keys with the buttons in the handle will not fit into your lock because they are too wide?
If so then you would need to cut off the "tabs" that prevent key from going in all the way or shave them down a bit, BUT..........those tabs are used to unlock the steering wheel as well as to take stress off of the key shaft when turning the key in the lock, so grain of salt.
Not sure if the wider tab rings will fit your lock, you could hit wrecking yards to get a few samples
If you were referring to the Transceiver ring around the ignition lock that sends the PATS key number to the PATS unit(inside engine computer), that ring is just an antenna, removing it won't disable PATS, it would cause a No Start because PATS key numbers could not be received by PATS unit
There is no work around for disabling PATS, wouldn't be much of an anti-theft system if there was, lol.

I bought a new style ford key with the key attached to the FOB. So I did the ignition 8 times then programmed the key and it would lock unlock the doors. So I went ahead and cut that plastic tabs around the ignition off so I could accommodate the larger plastic key since I figured it would work with the ignition. I went into town they cut the key it would turn in the lock cylinder but would not program with the 2 original keys. Long story short They key you are thinking of will not work with a 2006 ranger but will work with a 2006 f-150 go figure. So I had to send the new cut key back and and use a separate FOB to lock unlock. But one nice thing about having a separate key and remote is when I run into the convenience store I can pop the FOB off my key chain lock the doors and let my truck run locked with the air or heat on. But now I have a cut up ignition shroud which I just have to get used to. Just a heads up get a separate fob. Good luck

I just bought a pair of these and they work great and were easy to program. Shame the integrated keys won't work
