well i just filled up again on Sunday morning. my average was only about 15.6 mpg. that was for mainly driving around town, no highway miles. this was while doing ~2000 RPMS.

sunday morning i drove to the jersey shore to my grandparents, but did it at my regular pace (staying in the left lane passing people).. and like 75% of that trip was highway... there and back i used a bit of gas, so i filled up when i got home sunday night. for that day my average was 18.2 mpg.

so my results show me it really doesn't matter how i drive.. my truck will not get decent gas mileage by driving lightly.

 

ive tried this ever since readin bout it. it has actually helped save me gas. i get like 50-60 more miles on a tank of gas.

 

strider, you have to remember tho, that your truck is "programmed" for lead feet. it might take a lil bit before the mileage increases.

 

Another tank in the books.. this one was 19.2 MPG..

 

Hi, fairly new here.

I commute about 120 miles a day roundtrip, I have an 04 Ranger 4x2 with a 4.0 my average mileage is about 23.5 the best ever (last week) was 25.86. Oh ya, almost all the miles are freeway miles, I fill up twice a week and the tank that includes some city driving (weekends) shoots the hell out of my mileage, brings it down to around 21-22 for that tank.
I drive at 64-65 mphfrom the moment I pass the idiots going 40 on the on ramp until I get near work.
From what I can see anything under 2500 rpm saves gas, I tried the drive at 70, then 69 and average was about 23 mpg. I just crank up the tunes or tune in to some prime Bush bashing and ignore the people passing me, tunes really help for that lol.

So far the thing that helped me the most was having the pcm reflashed to get rid of my pinging issue,
just my 2 cents...

 

I've never bothered to read up on exactly how the 'EPA' mileage figures are computed. Here is the 'test schedule' they use. Notice that not once in the entire test do they test the vehicle in conditions over 60 MPH! The average speed for the highway test is 48 MPH!

 

I did the under 2000 test myself.

Pretty much i leanred this :

under 2000 i get pretty good gas mileage

BUT, highway driving EVEN racing around, I get much better gas mileage. This includes burnouts and ****. 3 Drives to my friends house 20 miles away and i was getting better mpg than pokin around slowly..


Now i just need to move to a town with more highways!

 

i personally can not keep it under 2000 rpms. ill be at a stop light and barely push in the gas and it jumps to 2000 rpms. if i want to actually go anywhere i have to be higher than that. i normally average about 16mpg city(work is about 20mi) and highway about 18-19. it varies. thats with the 3.0L 4x4 with 265/75/R16

 

Lately I've noticed that the tach actually blips up to about 2000 RPM while I'm upshifting.. even w/o my foot on the throtle. It's kinda wierd..

Careful Measuring And A Little Wood Removal Makes A Good And Easily Movable Fit

 

That's defintly been tested & PROVEN not to work.

This thread was sleeping for 6+ months... way to dig up an oldy! Glad you did though, I have been thinking about selling my POS honda (daily driver) to a friend and drive my truck for work, I drive 100+ miles per day normaly, but get paid .445 per mile over 20miles. So good to see that at $2.94 it costs us about .15 per mile. I would still be doing really good with milage payments. :)

 

Going to throw this out there, keeping speed down i can get 25-26 (EPA rated at 23). That's like 65 MPH. I went to Texas this weekend, and apparently I10 has an 80 MPH speed limit. So I was cruising at 85, got 19.6. I average my mileage after each fill up. In town where the shifting at 2k and speed below 45, I can get 19. The whole speed thing really changes everything.

 

i might have to try that when i put in my tach. im a huge leadfoot on the vic

I found that after I changed my tranny (I was without 4th for a long time, so I was jumping to 5th at 35mph) my mileage has gone down. As long as Im on a flat road Im allright in 5th at 35, and I could care less what the guy behind me says about it, hes not filling my tank

 

just buy a civic...beat the bag out of it, and you'll still get 30mpg


so are you all the annoying drivers that go 20mph around a 45mph on ramp then take 5 mins to hit 65 (if you even do)?

 

I tried the shift at 2k rpms thing on my 4cyl ranger, but it just does not work at all, it just wont go anywhere.......it will, but it takes forever. I guess you could say im an inexperienced gas saver. lol If I shift at 3k rpms each time, I can actually go somewhere at a reasonable unleaded foot pace while being light on the gas pedal.

 

Im not over 65yrs of age so that doesnt apply to me But, I wont endanger myself and others on the road to save gas. When I get on the expressway i will match or exceed current speed of traffic flow, I wont get on at 30 an expect everyone to brake for me like alot of old people do.

btw, top speed for a 4x4 ranger with a 4.0 auto is 60mph. any faster and u top 2000rpm.

 

After becoming a softy while driving for a while, I did basically that.

Saw all types of improvements, but here recently I'm back on my I WANT MORE kick

 

I bought my truck to drive it. Not to wuss around and get good gas mileage. Even though it would be nice to break double digits once in a while.
