Ok I’m new to all this forum stuff so sorry if I sound dumb but I need some help please.
ive got a 04 ranger 3.0 4x2 and long story short I got it from a junk yard and the guy who was living in the junk yard at the time was more than in outer space.. I’ve put a ton of money into this truck. Crate 3.0 and some extras on the motor. But the transmission is definitely not the stock one out of this truck. I get a cel code p0720 for my output speed circuit. I’ve got 2 pig tale plugs that are right next to my trans but don’t plug into anything. I heard something about Dakota Digital has a programer I can use to re calibrate everything and make it work. Seems not too hard but here’s where I need help,
1. What wires and what color are they that I’m looking for under the dash to be able to splice into to use ?
2. If installed, will it turn off my CEL so I can pass smog ( I’m here in California)
You would probably be better off by "biting the bullet" and selling the 1995-2000 4R44E transmission and buying a 2001-2008 5R44E from a Ranger 3.0l or Mazda B3000 2WD
I was wrong about the Dakota digital unit for a replacement for the OSS signal, it wouldn't work for that application, it is a speedometer interface but the OSS is different that the VSS in that it uses Computers signal return as its ground reference not the vehicle ground like a VSS or ABS sensor does
So there is no way to cross connect them that I can see, or you would be grounding out ALL the other sensors in the vehicle, ALL
And the 2004 has a digital dash so can't even get the speedo working with this unit, speed signal to speedometer is not done by wire and AC volts like 1995-2003, it a digital signal from the computer over the CAN bus network
Bottom line, you need to swap out that transmission for a newer one, out side of the labor you should be able to sell the WORKING 4R44E and get a working 5R44E for about the same price, the 4R44Es are from/for older higher mile vehicles so will always sell fairly quickly
55E only came on the 4.0l V6 engines so bell housing wouldn't fit on your 3.0l engine
44E came on BOTH 2.3l 4cyl and 3.0l V6, and each has different bell housing pattern, so you can only use one from a 3.0l 2WD
The 3.0l was discontinued in 2009, so 2001-2008 Ranger 3.0l or Mazda B3000 would be the years that would work for you
Operationally they are the same but the 55E had a larger OD drum because of the higher torque of the 4.0l engine
55 = up to 550 ft/torque
44 = up to 440 ft/lb torque
3.0l has 180ft/lb torque rating
4.0l has 240ft/lb torque rating
So torque rating is over 2 times engine rating respectively, so operationally one is not "better" than the other, in fact a 55E on a 3.0l would cause a small loss of power because higher mass it would have to rotate with its lower torque
Just a heads up, 5R55E is the generic model number used by most wrecking yards and shops, if transmission came from a 3.0l Ranger/B3000 then its a 5R44E regardless of listed model number
Mazda B3000 used same 3.0l engine and trans as Ranger each model year
