OK... Alicia picked out a set of rims she likes online. I like them too. But I am worried about the offset and how they will stick out or lack there of....

NEW WHEELS:
-18x9
-Backspacing 5 inchs
-offset 0 MM

How much farther are these wheels gonna be than stock? I need an answer yesterday... I THINK that these wheels will be 1 inch wider on each side... am I right?


hmmm I wander if I have TPMS on this truck....

 

Since the wheels are 2" wider but the backspacing is .5" more than the stock they should only stick out 1.5" more. (I think, don't take my word for it though)

Stock backspacing is 4.5"

I'm 90% sure you have TPMS on that truck, air down one of the tires and find out.

 

can I remove the TPMS sensors on the stock wheels and put them on the new ones????

 

they have to be re adjusted. they arent in the wheels there in the hub and when one sinks lower than the others the sensor in the car knows.

 

I thought the sensors were banded around the wheels. At least that's how the sensors are mounted on my stock wheels.

 

Tire shops can re-band them on the new wheels.

 

They ARE banded to the wheel on the inside...NOT the hub. And yes they can be carried over.

In order to get an exact measurement difference you need to know the offset on the stock wheels. Measure the wheel's overall width, subtract its backspace and divide by two to get the offset.

 

Not sure but i think the stock wheels backspacing is 3.75.

 

TPMS is not in the hub! They are part of the valve stem but on the inside of the rim. There is a special procedure when dismounting/mounting tire with TPMS, so the sensors arent damaged. Its a pain in the ***. I have personally not removed the sensors to be replaced into new rims. In fact I would get rid of it if possible.

TPMS is not on the wheel it is in the rear axle.

TPMS is on a band on the wheel. The bands cannot be re-used but you can pull the sensors themselves and transfer them... I think the price I got per band was $60?? Plus whatever the tire shop charges for mounting since you'll probably want them remounted?? I opted out of it and now run without... also found out it takes the truck about 1-48 hours to recognize the TPMS error.... just an FYI

 

The recievers...IDK where they are. But the transponders are not associated with the valve stem...Ford's TPMS system is not like Chevy's that use the valve stem. It's basically a blue box that is on the inside of the tire, using what looks like a hose clamp to keep it attached to the rim. Typically on the opposite side of the valve stem.

The TPMS sensor is mounted with a band 180 degrees from the valve stem. the sensor can be reused but the band cant, you'll need to purchase 4 bands from ford for a vehicle with 18" rims and have them put on the new rims. If the new tires pressure will be different than stock, the tire pressure that sets the TPMS light can be adjusted in the computer.

some mountaineers and explorers, and 2010 fusions use a valve stem mounted sensor, but the ranger doesnt

STL states that it is part of the rear axle. older windstars with the first design of a TPMS system read off of the abs sensors at the hubs. so if this were a windstar forum, then stl and 91 project stx would be right LOL

 

I know this for a fact cause i had them, its a metal band that goes on the inside of the rim and they cannot be reused, but the sensor can be reused but u will need 4 new bands. Also like stated before I got a price from Ford $40. bucks for the bands.

 

Honestly Ben... I just bailed on the TPMS system... I have a yellow light always on my dash but it's right next to my fog light which is also always on so I don't even notice it... IMO it's not worth the money/effort to move the system over but to each their own...

I agree about who needs TPMS... the issue at hand is our trucks came with the system whether we like it or not so we need to decide to ditch it and deal with the constant error light or spend the money to keep it updated...

 

I'm takeing out the bulb or clipping the wire. or heck Ill rig it somehow

 

I've heard it's not possible unless you tape over the light... lol... so if you figure it out PM instructions to me!!

 

i dont see why you cant remove the bulb, but ill look at an 09 wiring diagram tomorrow at work and let u know
