Power Window Motor Doesn't Stop In Up Position

I have a 2001 Ford Ranger with power windows. The driver's side window rolls up and down fine. However, when I roll the window all the way up, the motor won't stop when the window is in the closed position and makes a loud popping noise until I take my finger off of the power window switch. I'm trying to determine troubleshooting steps before I start taking the door apart:
  • Is it possible to reset Ford power window modules?
  • Are there any mechanisms outside of the motor that tell the motor when the window is in the open or closed position?

Thank you for your assistance!

You need a new motor for that window

Power window motors have a thermal switch inside, when window stops moving the thermal switch heats up and opens, breaking the 12volt connection

There are no sensors, and no modules or external switches involved, its the motor and its internal switch

And yes it can work fine down and not up, and vise versa

And over time it will strip the regulator gear and then you have to replace both

Internal door parts seen here: http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/fr/full.aspx?Page=23

The power window regulator #13 or 14 is riveted to the door so you need to drill out the rivets
You then prop window up and pull out regulator with the motor

1993 to 2011 Rangers and Mazda B-series all used the same regulator and motor, there is drivers side(LH) and passenger side(RH) difference, but other than that they are all the same
So wrecking yards should have these, as regulator with motor or just the motor

You use small nuts and short bolts(with lock washers) to replace rivets or use new rivets if you have a riveter

Heads up, NEVER touch the EDGE of tempered glass(auto glass) with metal tool, it will shatter instantly, glass is very tough away from the edge, but at the edge POOF, no more window, lol

Thank You!

Thank you Ron for providing a quick response! The information you provided saved me some troubleshooting time. I'll start looking for a new motor this weekend.
