Probably a stupid question about trans fluid

yea, I searched but most results dealt with rebuilds, etc., so here goes.

I seem to have a small trans leak around the gasket, specifically around 2 of the rear bolts. The bolts tight, but there's just enough fluid around the bolt head to make a drop of fluid on my drive about once every 2 or 3 days (when I drive it).

Rather than spend the $400 or so to have a new filter, gasket & fluid job done (like I should) I'm going to have to skimp by grabbing a can of trans fluid.

Question is... does it matter what type of fluid I use? Type F, H, mercon, dextron3 type3?

I've probably lost less than a shot glass of fluid now, but I can't find any extra cans laying around the garage. I figure a $2 can of fluid will get me by until I have the money for a proper replacement.. but I didn't want to get the wrong type if there is any difference.

I have a 96 4x4 auto 4.0l with less than 60k original miles.

For 50 internet bonus points...

When I get around to having the trans filter/gasket/fluid changed, do I need to change the oil as well?

The stealership told someone I know they had to do an oil change when they had their trans filter/gasket/fluid changed. Sounded like a $59 pile of BS to me.

I plan on going to one of the $19 quick lube places rather than pay Ford $59 for the privilege of setting in their waiting room.

No, you don't have to change the engine oil if you change it at regular intervals. The tranny fluid should be Mercon ATF.

use mercon V, if you pay $400 to have it done you shall be shot (lol), the engine oil does not have to be changed, and just do it yourself, buy a filter/gasket kit and 4-6 qts of mercon V and change it. buy a wix or good quality gasket and filter, try to find the gasket with the metal sleeves around the bolt holes, those work best usually
