Pulling someone out

Whats the proper technique when pulling out a stuck vehicle?

I pulled a stuck jeep out today that was caught up on a concrete ditch.

Depends on the situation. In that situation, a nice subtle pull in 4lo would probably do the trick. No need to ******, really.

Always try to just pull them out steadily before snatching. Snatching is very hard on both vehicles. Sometimes that's the only way though. When I do have to ****** I try to stagger my truck and theirs. This gradually tightens up on the strap and PULLS on the vehicle instead of yanking it all at once.

And NEVER ****** on a trailer ball. The one currently located in my tailgate is from the person pulling me having a 5/8" shaft ball in a pintle hitch that was supposed to have a 1" shaft ball. It cocked sideways and well, you see the result.

Yeah really, another 2 feet higher and you might not have been around today.

Never use a chain to pull anyone out of anything, don't even use a tow strap that has metal hooks, both can be very harmful and sometimes fatal.

Always check you tow points also, If it isn't securely fastened it will become a deadly projectile.

When I pull someone out of a stuck, I try to go at it real easy in 4lo, if that doesn't work, then like Chris said, stagger the trucks and give it a gentle tug, not ***** out full throttle. Most of the time with the stuck vehicle helping, it will come right out.

damn , i've seen bumpers get pulled off, even the rear axle ripped out from underneath by snatching but i've never seen trailer ball stuck in a tail gate. that's a first. but like the rest said you're lucky.

i saw a guy damn near get his head taken off through his back wind shield from getting snatched out with a chain.

Yeah, I was definitely lucky. It could have been much worse. I usually leave my toolbox lid open for some extra protection though. If you look though, you can see a dent in the top left side of the toolbox....that's from another ball. That one actually broke the reese hitch that it was in.

Nate, I still have that tailgate on. I get a lot of questions and comments on it for sure.
