Was talking with a friend yesterday about my Ranger, when i told him that my engine had been replaced over 4 years ago. He told me that having a replaced engine halved 1/2 my resale value . My immediate reaction was that there was no way, but i want to hear some different opinions on the matter.

Some more facts are that the replacement engine came out of a 2002 B2300, has less miles than the original, i have the original receipt for the engine, and documentation of shop which did the repairs.

What do you guys think? This is probably just as much a philosophical question as a practical one.

 

I don't see how unless you damaged the pickup somehow. To me it would not make a difference unless you put something that it did not originally come with like a V-8 or something. It has been in there for 4 years so it is not like you just did it and something went wrong and now you are passing the buck to someone else. You have documentation, just be honest with the buyer.

Reconstructed title i definitely understand. When i was told it would half the value i thought to myself that i could have two complete engines put in professionally for half of what my truck is worth.

 

nah it wouldnt cut your trucks value in half...maybe more like 1/8th if that

 

I don't think it would have much affect unless the engine was worse then the one before. If its a new engine it might actually help a little.

 

why worry about whats its gonna be worth. sellin it?

 

As long as the vehicle runs there is no effect on its value.

These things aren't 60's muscle cars with uber rare engine options.

 

i am considering it. Not because i need to or want to get rid of it, just have an urge to try something different.

 

why even mention it has a replacement engine? The R title (Rebuilt here in ontario canada) or i guess Reconstructed title in the US is a death sentence for me. I wouldn't touch one with a ten foot pole.. NOT because the vehicle has anything wrong with it, but because come time to sell... GOOD LUCK. That DOES definitely affect the resale...

but an engine... thats like telling people you replaced the tranny... shouldn't affect the value of it at all.

 

I don't think it would make much of a difference in value if it's the same style engine. If it was swapped for a different type of engine then I think it may be a different story.

 

agree. if it is some weird swap people will wonder if the install was done correctly, if it will all work reliably, who did the install.
more people probably want them as they came from the factory. But if you replace a 4.0 sohc with a 4.0 sohc, samesies samesies. swap in a pedal drive? not so much.
