I have been running an open filter for years with no problems, except the occasional intentional puddle splash that get's the filter wet.

However, I just replaced plugs, tightened the exhaust leak at the manifold/down tube, removed A/C components, and in the process I noticed how much metal is blocking free air from getting to my filter.

I'm considering cutting out the area directly below the filter, marked with a silver paint pen (kinda). It doesn't seem to provide too much crucial support to the core or fender, and it was previously used to hold the old air-box, so who needs it?
I was also considering cutting out the rectangular portion on the side wall where the two holes are that also used to hold the stock air-box in.



That would allow me to extend the filter down closer to free air, instead of behind the headlight....kinda like this:

If you do that then you will have the MORE occasional puddle that gets the filter wet. Just something to think about.

It doesn't seem like you will get that much more cold air by doing this, but who knows.

If it were mine, I wouldn't do it, but I like seeing new things done to rangers so go for it lol.

 

id eliminate that sharp bend in the pipe before i cut that out

 

You will gain nothing

 

It normally sits like this. I just had it wedged below the metal to give perspective.

 

Don't do it. You won't gain anything except more wet filters.

 

x2 on the sharp bend and if you really wanted to relocate it i would try to ge behind the grill or something IF you HAVE to relocate it

Box the filter in so it sucks its air from behind the headlight and next to the radiator. Something similar to say a S&B CAI for a Cummins...

 

This would be like the volant kit for the rangers right? You pics arent working..
