Silly question....

Is it illegal to drive with the tailgate down? or can I remove the tailgate completely?? I don't want to get pulled over by cops though, i'm not sure if it's ok to do this.

Canada likes to restrict or take away its citizens privliges all together.

You might want to check on that one. Here in the states I have never heard of such a thing.

I know here in Ohio you can get pulled over for it being down only if you have unsecured cargo in the bed. Canada I'm really not sure.

What's the reason to take it off?

Yeah, the only restriction would be if you had an unsecure load in the bed. Aside from that I have never been pulled over for it. But as mentioned above, I hope you are not doing this with the thoughts that it will improve your mpg's.....

It sounds like it varies from state to state, so I would say check with your local government and find out for sure.

Maybe if the person trying to report you to the police is in a lifted black ranger (WITHOUT THE HEADLIGHT MOD) delivering pizzas, then yeah, I can see that happening.

Back to your regularly scheduled thread.

yes, it's illegal to drive like that. if you get into an accident from behind, you could be at fault. (like driving with 2x4s with no red flag)

as for mileage, it won't help. the has been proven on mythbusters. the tailgate closed creates a pocket of air and the air that passes over the truck bounces off of this. if the tailgate is open, it will cause more turbulance and result in less gas mileage.

also someone posted in another thread, with no tailgate the sides of the bed will sag.

another good point not to. if yo hit a big enough of a bump, the tailgate can come off of the hinges. the company i used to work for had rusty tailgates and things were not aligned properly and i had a tailgate came off on me.
