I had the same exact problem when I got my tilt column from the junkyard. The easiest way is to take a chisel/flat head screw driver and just start breaking the cylinder apart (be careful not to damage the column, especially the part around the cylinder). Eventually you will get to the part where you can pull most of it out. But you will most likely leave the tip on it in. You can see how this tip looks by pulling the one in your vehicle out. You will need to take some needle nose pliers and turn the tip till it is released.

This is the way I did it. Took about 30 mins. Just be careful.

I forgot to mention that you hit the screwdriver with a hammer (duh).

Take your column out, two screws on the bottom, maybe one or two inside, i can't remember.
Put your key in the Cylinder. (so it doesn't explode on this next part). And smack the back side of that sucker out. should pop with a bit of doing.

Did you just hammer and chisel it to pieces?

If your really want to make that column look nice you can add a lincoln towncar multifunction switch to it.
