In the periodic table, palladium has the atomic number 46 and is chemical symbol is Pd. Palladium is characterized by the lowest melting point and the less dense metal in the platinum group.
The platinum group metal include: platinum, palladium and rhodium. Palladium is rare like platinum and it is the most lustrous of platinum group metal. Even if it is a rare element, many countries are producing palladium: Canada, USA, Russia, South Africa.
Palladium is mostly used for catalytic converters. More than 50% of the sold palladium goes into the catalytic converters production. You can also find palladium in medicine products and in many chemical applications. Palladium works as a catalyst that speeds up hydrogenation and has dehydrogenation to break up petroleum.
In the catalytic converter recycling business, it takes approximately 80lbs of honeycomb monolith to have 1oz of platinum. Actually, catalytic converter contains approximately 2lbs of honeycomb monolith. That means that recyclers need at least 40 catalytic converters to extract 1 oz of palladium. Only high tech equipment from crushing to sampling can determine the exact content of palladium in honeycomb monolith. Just a few companies can offer this kind of service. PMR refiner is among the leader in this area.

Platinum
In the periodic table, platinum has the atomic number 78 and the chemical symbol is Pt. Platinum is characterized by its resistance to corrosion even at high temperature and in moist air conditions.
This precious metal is also dense, malleable and ductile. By these characteristics, platinum is considered to be a noble metal. South Africa is by far the largest producer of platinum in the world.
Platinum is a precious metal because it is one of the rarest elements on Earth. Its characteristics and rarity explain the high value on the market. Platinum is mostly used for catalytic converter, however, you can find platinum in jewelry and in many electrical equipment.
In 2006, 59% of the sold platinum went into catalytic converters and 20% went into jewelry. This metal works as a catalyst that turns carbon dioxide from engine combustion into water vapor.

You know whats awesome... When I worked at the Dodge dealer we had a brand new sprinter van from off the lot come in with the check engine light on. The code was for the DPF so while we were trying to figure out why it was setting a code with less than 25 miles on it we noticed that the DPF was gone. Apparently someone thought it was the Catalytic converter and stole it. I wish I could have seen their face when the guy at the JY told him that he stole a DPF and not a cat

Been going on for quite a while around here too... my boss had one stolen off his car at work when he left it overnight. You can get around $60 a piece at the scrap yard around here... I took the 5 in off our two derby cars and came away with $300. That's about what we paid for the two cars to begin with.... lol.
