Someone tried to steal my spare tire

Well, yesterday I was ready to go to work and as I was walking to my truck I realized that there was a cigarette pack on the rear bumper. So I thought that someone tried to steal my spare tire (for the 5th time) and I was right. They messed with the spare tire lock but couldn't remove it. To my disgrace, they broke the plastic thing that goes around the lock.

So, now I have to do something to protect my spare tire from being stolen.

If any of you guys have an idea to modify the spare tire rod opening to make really hard for thieves to lower/steal it, I'll deeply appreciate your help.

Thanks

Do you think you might know the people trying to steal your spare? That's pretty odd that somebody would try 5 times to steal your spare...

You could screw a metal plate over the opening using torx head screws, that would make it a bit more difficult to get to the lock. Just make sure you always have something with the right bit to get to your spare if you need to.

Have you thought to get to the valvestem and check the air pressure in the tire yet ?
They may have gotten PO'd enough when they couldn't get it out to ventilate it with a sharp implement.

All the attempts were in different places. Stealing spare tires is very common around were I live. That's why i put a chain around it and the frame. The tire was lowered 3 times, but since they couldn't cut the chain, they gave up. The one time they cut the first chain I had, they didn't lower the tire. I took my chain to be hardened, so it is more difficult to be cut. The lock I have is a heavy duty one. lol.

I have a chain around the rim and the tire itself. They'd have to cut the chain to get the tire, or mess with the tire. And I guess they want the tire complete, since it is a kinda expensive tire.

Hey it only took me one beer to come up with an idea you'll think won't work.
Find the smallest electric winch you can , maybe rated 500#.
Mount it beside or just above the existing lift mechanism.
Connect it to be run from inside the cab (ie-hidden switch in rear seat compartment.)
Remove the existing cable that lowers the spare and connect it to the winch cable.
Use security chain as you have been.
Clean up the existing tool hole you now use for lowering the spare.
When someone goes to lower the spare the conventional way , they will be there for a while until they think the lowering mechanism is broken and can't get the tire out.

Why not just take it off? Leave it at home and if you need it call and have someone run it out to you.

That's one option. I was thinking about that, maybe get one of those repair kits... Nothing is definitive yet... Thanx

My spare tire doesn't even have a lock over the crank hole. Its so rusty though I doubt anyone would want it.

I guess the fact that it is an expensive tire makes it so stealable. lol.
