stock exhaust/new exhaust questions

hey,
i have a 2001 ranger 3.0 v6. i was curious as to what the stock exhaust size is. i also am going to make my own exhaust (40 series si/do dumped before axle) and i want to unbolt the stock exhaust system so i can put it on later if i want to. i was wondering what would i need to buy so that i can bolt a new pipe right one. i was thinking of buying the oem cat-muffler piece from advanced auto for $45. what do you guys think i should do?
thanks alot,
dillont

I thought 4.0s were 2.5 and 3.0s were 2.25.

^^no.

On my 01 4.0L.......last cat to coupler is 2.5, after coupler is 2.0, after muff is 2.0, tip is enlarged to 2.25. I think i've seen 04+ with the tip enlarged to 2.5. Don't know for surethough. That's on a 4.0L, remember.

You could just go to a junkyard or check out craigslist and hack off one of those couplers to the muffler, and use that as a starting point. Should be 2" is what's needed.

Should have said.......they may have changed things around a little....like tail pipe size and the like. And with engine differences. That's why I put the year and engine size.
