It's not used on the Ranger, but can be turned on spuriously for a number of reasons. Not sure why yours is coming on though.

It's on everybody's dash -- just never lit (well, for MOST of us, lol).

That is for the Explorer air suspension system and it contolled by switching pin 9 to ground in the 10-pin connector of the cluster. On Rangers, that pin position should be empty. Since you should have no wire there, it may be going to ground through the trace somehow.

I wondered about that. I thought maybe it still connected to the PCM and maybe a bug in it could cause it to light.

According to the 99 Explorer schematic, the ground is provided by the Air Suspension Control Module. The other side of the light is hot in START and RUN, so any unintentional ground will light it.

well that makes sense as it would flicker for a while then go off or stay on think i should be worried about something shorting out in the truck?

Definitely something is not as it should be. The good news is that it sounds like the phantom ground is on the ground side of the bulb where it belongs, sort of.

The easiest fix would be to pull the bulb. Or you could investigate the cause by looking for reasons why the trace is grounding, if that is what it's doing. It is not often easy to follow the paths of the multiple layers on the back of the cluster, though.

Now that the existance of this unused light has been made know, I give it 'till next fall before John comes up with some crazy modified use for this light. :)

I don't believe that my 03 cluster has that light. I have silver faced LII gauges and it's very easy to see the lettering cutouts.
