Low fuel idiot light...???

Should my 2000 Ranger XLT have a low fuel or check gauge light that comes on when the gas gets low? I was just wondering because if I am not mistaken my 2002 Edge that I owned had one, but I have yet to see one come on in my 2000 Ranger.

Ok, I was just curious. I wonder why they would have put it on a 99 and then not put it on a 2000?

That depends. It appears that the trucks with a tach cluster had a "Check Gage" light but the tachless cluster had no low fuel warning. All 2001+ have a tach standard, so they all have a fuel warning of some type.

Here's a short summary of what I was able to find for low fuel indicators on Rangers:

2004+: Low fuel LED

2001~2003: "Check Gage" light

1996~2000 w/ tach: "Check Gage" light
1996~2000 w/o tach: No warning

(The "Check Gage" light will illuminate for low fuel level, high coolant temp or low oil pressure.)

does 94 have it? sometimes when I'm on E I just drive around to see if i do have a gas warning light. I've had my gas gauge like a quarter of an inch below E and a light never came on. Probably should have asked a while ago but whatever I have AAA lol.

edit: ok guess I don't have one, bob beat my post.

Ok, so if I swapped out my cluster for one with a tach then would the check gauge light in the new cluster work?

Yes. Keep in mind that there have been changes to the other indicator lights over the years. Finding a tach cluster from a similar year Ranger (98~2000) would be the best bet for an easy plug and play installation that has all the right indicators in the right positions.

Mine has one but it doesnt come on unless I'm like on the E. I've only seen it twice doing my entire year of owning the truck.

I have NEVER seen a low fuel light or CEL when low. I've even run it down a couple times to fumes. Put 16 gal of gas in it 2 times, and never had a light.

Not the CEL. For 2003, the low fuel warning is one of the functions of the small round "CHECK GAGE" light above the coolant temp gauge.

At 16 gallons used, the tank level may not have been low enough to trigger the light. Supercab tank capacity is 19.5 and the light comes on with roughly 3~4 gallons left - it varies truck to truck.

That's the way my '03 is. The needle is WAY down there when it finally comes on. I've often wondered if gas gauges are a bit pessimistic to help keep you from running out of gas. I generally don't let it get that low. I like to top off the tank before it gets below half tank. Less shock at the gas pump. Mine took 44 dollars to fill it from "check gauges" empty last weekend. I watched a lady put $77 in her Dodge Ram, so I didn't feel quite as bad.

I've run my 2000 down so far as to put in 17.5 gallons in and no light came on. I even have the tac too. I just look at the little gauge to see where I'm at, and I keep a log of average mpg's so looking at my odometer tells me how close I am to calling AAA too.

19.5 ???? Well that explains a few things. For some reason I always thought it was 16.5. I will say this though...my gauge is BURRIED in the empty mark when I've put 16 gals in her. It's nice to know now I got a little reserve.
