taking off the doors

i was thinking of taking off the doors sometime during the summer. kinda like a jeep would do. is it legal to do this? i would like to see, and would make it easier for the work i am doing in the back of my house

EdGe_wannabe 06-14-2006 10:53 AM

It's easy. It's legal. And your visibility is greatly increased.

But you also have to have side mirrors if youre gonna run it on the street! And please tell me you wear a seatbelt at all times?!

Well howdaya do it then!?
I'd like to take mine off and just cruise around the back roads! That'd be a thrill for me and my wife both!

Is it a matter of pulling hinge pins or something? I know on jeeps you just unstrap them and lift!

Kanoeking 06-14-2006 11:08 AM

You have to unbolt the door from the hinge, then modify your wiring if you have PW/PL and speakers in the doors, then its just a matter of liftin them out to somewhere safe for the time being.

telemaster1952 06-14-2006 11:17 AM

yes i do wear a belt andrew
and i have a bracket to set up the mirrors and my wireing to the door has a disconnect connector for an easy disconnect. the dooor button(one that turns on the lights) i have to rewire

Kanoeking 06-14-2006 11:19 AM

Oh yeah i forgot to mention that you have to either duct tape the plunger for the dome light down or rewire it....i didnt know that they put the disconnects in the gen2's?!!??!

Kanoeking 06-14-2006 11:20 AM

Oh you also may wanna check by unhooking your harness if the dinger still stays on...that would get super annoying otherwise....

telemaster1952 06-14-2006 11:23 AM

mine is just a button that is pushed down when the door is closed

EdGe_wannabe 06-14-2006 11:24 AM

Here's a pic. of mine when I was in the process of taking my doors off...

Thats what i thought...on mine the dinger and dome are located as part of the latch.

It is illegal in some states (PA) and remember, it's a structuraly important part...but some will tell you that does not matter offroading.....when rolls are likely to occur... :biggthump

Red_Ak_Ranger 06-14-2006 02:30 PM

Most offroading anyone does on this site except a few ppl they will never roll.

Also it'd be very likely to assume driving doorless would be ILLEGAL in almost all 50 states.

So doors are a safety device and law states you must keep safety devices intact. It all depends on teh cop.

rolla_guy72 06-14-2006 02:33 PM

I was about to look into that today... I wanna try it next time I go offroading... Is there some kind of disconnect for my speaker wires in my door, or will I have to rig something up?? I know Summit Racing has some connectors that could be used.

why not find another set of doors and make half doors
taking the doors completely off looks like crap and like the truck is incomplete. half doors gives you the visabilty and it looks better.

rolla_guy72 06-14-2006 06:19 PM

I like the "no doors" look.

I think we'd disagree on looks. Nodoors looks good. Anyways, half doors can't be really seen thru. People need to get tubedoors.

It is perfectly legal in pennsylvania as long as you have a four inch tall foot plate. Like a wrangler, how the bottom of the door is like four or five inches higher than the actual floor. You need that, other wise as long as you have a driver's side mirror you're legal. A PSP trooper friend told me that.

I was looking into doing it but I don't wanna weld some ghetto looking plates in my interior. I actually helped a friend do this mod in a 85 k5 blazer, took it to my psp buddy's house and he was like "Yeah, that's perfectly legit". We put a lil removable mirror on the driver's side.

l2en 06-14-2006 08:11 PM

Who? Your parole officer?

lol j/k

telemaster1952 06-14-2006 08:15 PM

Police Office.....parole officer-lol

got-dirty 06-14-2006 08:19 PM

my question is are you really thinkin about doing this on your "mostly stock" ranger? and if so, um why?

telemaster1952 06-14-2006 08:27 PM

i <3 my ranger and i have no money for a lift so 28" bfgs will be the closest to offroad preping i have and i use it for work in the woods and trail work at a local camp so i figure that it would make work quicker
