Explorer axle question.......

i am getting my mom shocks for her '97 Explorer for Christmas..........

what is the 3rd shock on the axle for? it runs at an angle on the 8.8?

i dont have a picture of it so if someone knows any help will be nice!

3rd shock? wtf i have never noticed that and my mom even owned a Explorer Sport...

it's some kind of stabilizer my brothers has it on his.

yup.....you have the 2 that mount to the spring perches and run vertical....then there is one that runs up to the center at an angle.....

kinda like this:

l / l .......only at more of an angle......

I've heard of guys adding a third shock like that to help with wheel hop.

it's stock though, I saw a thread somewhere about people removing them to get more flex.

Well it must be for some sort of lateral stability. My guess would be something similar to an anti-sway bar. Is the thing IRS?

It was from an s-10. Some upgraded models had them. It was a common mod to add one to those that didn't have them to help with wheel hop.

02+ 4 door...is IRS and it doesnt have 3

ok yeah well I could see where that could help prevent wheel hop then. It's some sort of stabilizer.

its kinda like your engine damper... helps keep it from moving

so if i took it out what would it do?

what type of shock should i replace it with?

you replace it with whatever autozone stocks for it


its only on the straight axle rears of explorers. Not sure if all models had it, but when i bought my explorer axle for a swap it had it
