Time for a new ranger (4x4)

My truck is up for sale and I have been starting to look for a 4x4 ranger. I searched autotrader and found a few that look pretty nice to me.

For the 1st one (red) I only have one concern. It has a skid plate.
Not that i have a problem with it, but it makes me think that the other owner has already taken it off road.

This is the other one I found (grey)

If anyone has a carfax account that would be appricated.....

What do you think of them...

im sure it was...i know my truck was taken off-road before i owned it because of some stains on the mats, but that may have been for hunting, fishing, or his job. the dealer or whoever did it cleaned the truck up very nice.

i say go for it. look it over first and ask if you can take it somewhere to have it looked at if your still not sure. thats a pretty good price for a 4x4.

even light off roading can be hazardous with out skid plates
that model probably came with at least some skid plates from the factory
the only reason Ford does not put front plates on all their 'off road' Rangers is to push people into the more expensive models

What do you think about buying a truck that MAY have already been taken off road?
A dealership is selling it, so they dont know anything about where it has been. And if they do they sure as hell wont tell you.

I guess all in all i need to go look at the truck.....

^^^like i said before, im pretty certain my truck touched some offroad in some way before i owned it but it was kept in very nice shape. the truck was 2 years old with only 28K on the odometer. its run great and then some.

best advice would be to check the truck out and use your best judgement. no one can tell you what to do and how to base your decisions. ive put my ranger through hell and back and shes still runnin beautifully. so theres no question they can handle some abuse.

The skid plates on that truck are factory. I have a 2000 also with all the factory skid plates. There is a front skid plate, one on the t-case, and one on the gas tank. I wouldn't be too worried about it. Look at it, the front factory plate is the shinny stainless one it dents really easy. You will be able to tell if it served its purpose.

Go for the red one anyway it appears to have a 4.0 the grey one is a flex fuel which means itz the wussie lil 3.0

Lots of vehicles with factory skid plates never see dirt. If it did, well, that's what it was built for. I wouldn't be concerned about it. I'd be more concerned about how well it was maintained.

Ya so I just got back from looking at the red 4.0.
So i went there (20 miles away) and no one knew what truck i was talking about.
I walked around the whole place and looked for it and i couldnt find it.
I just wasted my gas driving to a dealership that doesnt know anything about a 2000 ranger.
kinda pissed.......

I don't agree. I think only the FX4 packages (regular and LII) come w/ plates these days. And skid plates was a fairly exotic option when I was in HS.

If you don't intend to off road and want the 4x4 mostly for snow use, then I think skid plates are unneeded weight. I actually considered them optional when shopping given the mild mud/rock schleping I do..

just go lok at the truck, its easy to tell if its been offroading, because mud can get pretty much anywhere, check on the engine, (mud can stain the engine, but can be cleaned) and then check underneath in the back b/w the bed and the back fender, theres a gap that they might forget to clean out.

they look good though go for it definately!
