OK I need some opinions here. When I had my stepside I had a toolbox and now I have a fleetside I have a tonneau cover. I love the cover. It is the one like Stone has/had (don't remember for sure but there was a thread on it not to long ago). And I can't decide weather or not I have the tonneau or a toolbox.

I love the tonneau for winter and ****ty weather.
I like the toolbox for hauling my lawn stuff (hedge trimmer and chainsaw) in it and little things like bags and some tools.

But I also want a cap for the summer cause I do a lot of camping and sleep in the truck. But the other thing I was looking at was the inbed boxes. But the only thing is I couldn't access that with the tonneau that I have. What would you guys do?

I will try and find that thread about the tonneau.

Here is the tonneau. Except on mine the first like 8 inches doesn't fold up. That is stationary to the bed. I'll try and get a pic when it stops snowing.

 

cover... just put ur lawn stuff under its like a bigger tool box...

 

I say go with the cap, but that's because I'm biased and I want to get a cap. haha

 

That is another thing though. It is a pain in the *** to back in a trailer when you can't see out of the back window due to the tonneau.

 

why not get a toolbox and a cover designed to work with a tool box thats what im looking for right now

 

Check out a cheap in bed toolbox. I got one from Rubbermate for about 40 dollars, its really hard plastic, I can stand on it, and I can move it around the bed. I use a load bar to hold it at the tailgate so that I can access it easily with the tonneau cover, but when the bed is empty or I have the cap on I slide it forward and reposition the bar. Works well for me, cheap and simple.

 

You got any pictures of your set-up Rob? That sounds like a good idea but I would probably get a good metal one cause I hate plastic ones.

 

i loved my cover!

i took it off and put my tool box in only to hold my fire gear and i still needed to use the bed for things that didn't fit under the cover.

i actually think i got a little better gas milage with it on???

Cover that one you posted is the Full Tilt.. i still have it on my truck go like Rob said with a rubber maid tool box mine has wheels on one side where is what i do...

I agree with you that I prefer the metals one far more than the plastic ones but for the price it was an easy choice for me. I've used 2 different plastic boxes, but the one i'm currently using is awesome imo. I'll try and get pictures for you of both.

 

Man just cut it down to size for a toolbox....All you need to do is measure your toolbox, and cut the rails down to size, then take the cover to an upholustry shop and have them re do it........This may only work with snaping tonneau covers???? Never seen the tilt ones done that way

 

I had a plastic box but it ended up to leak all the time. Now I have a metal low-pro and it is awesome.

 

i have a cross the rails tool box and nothing else it works for me... i have a camper shell too but that aint been on in years

 

I have a cap and it's pretty nice. I hold all my turnout gear (which is a huge bag right now), and still have 3/4 of bed space.

Now if I could do it again, I'd get an under the rail toolbox and linex. The toolbox is plenty of room for my gear and water tight. I don't like the look of the topper at all. BUT for a new truck...I think I'm doing roll n lock and linex. Or linex and toolbox :)

 

I have a factory Ford tonneau cover and love it. The front halve is keyed to my ignition key. I have seen some that the rear halve is also. Both halves open with gas struts. It also can have a center divider, but I don't have one. You also can fold the back on to the front to haul bigger things. It takes about 5 mins. to remove if you need to use the whole bed. I have a container strapped to the front of the bed to hold stuff. It is hard plastic too so you can strap things to the top also. It is the best tonneau I have ever seen IMO.

DEF in YOUR opinion thats for sure.. if i had that thing i would throw it away so fast i hate those.. then again couldn't throw it very far because it weights so damn much...

 

Zach, All I was doing was showing him another kind of cover and another option since he is asking for our opinions. I think it is a great cover. It is ok if you don't, I respect that. Everyone has their own opinions toward things.

 

i know thats fine if you show him lol... i just used to install these at the dealer on the sport trac and rangers PITA covers thats all

How does your t-cover block your view? It sits flat on the bed...

If I were you I'd get a cap and a toolbox like mine or a smaller one like it. The sell them at Wal-mart for like $40.

The tonneau would block my view if it was left up/open. The guy above said leave the tonneau open when I have my lawn equipment in the bed and I said that it would block my view when I am backing up a trailer.

I've got an in-bed tool box that I mount to rails which I have permanently installed to my bed. Goes in and out pretty quick so that I can load up the truck with whatever I need. It's nice not have to worry about things getting stolen when I'm parked -as opposed to a plastic box and no tonneau. Works out great.
