Towing a Cadillac with a 4 cylinder 5-speed Ranger

I just found this forum and I didn't have anything to say so I thought I would just show how tough these little 4 bangers can be. I'm towing an '09 Cadillac and with the tow dolly a total weight of over 4,000 pounds using just a tow ball in the bumper. Don't try this at home as the bumper is only rated for 2,000 pounds.

It was a one time thing towing such a heavy load. The Cadillac dealer declined warranty work and wanted to charge me to put the engine back together so I towed it home just a few miles.

No it's a Tow-N-Stow. Best dolly I ever had. No wider than the car I'm towing and I can take it apart before and after the tow and put it in the bed of a pickup or trunk of a car.

the qustion i have is why would a cadillac dealer decline warranty work on a vehicle thats under ONE year old? also, why was a ONE year old cadillacs engine disasembled?

I just bought it recently at an auction and it's got 95,000 miles on it. Yes 95K! I was told upfront that it needed an engine but except for some light rattling noise from the engine it ran fine, put 1000 miles on it already. I took it in to the dealer for the check engine light which was showing codes for the variable valve timing system. They scanned it and determined it need the timing chains replaced and told me it would be covered under the GM 100,000 miles powertrain warranty. So they started to take it apart and found a lot of sludge in the engine and said the warranty wouldn't cover it due to improper maintainance. They said I could pay for the job myself at $2,000, pay $650 to have them put it back together like it was and I can drive it out of there, or pay $350 for the work already done and tow it out of there. After a lot of arguing back and forth about them not mentioning there would be a checkout charge for warranty work and that by law they are required to give a written estimate BEFORE starting work, I was able to get the bill down to one hour labor, about $130 with the fees and supplies. I towed it home and have started working on it myself. Got the front cover off, removed the chain tensioners, guides, chains, and actuators. Waiting on some parts to start putting it back together.

wow thats a crock of sh!t.

98rangerxlt 04-03-2010 11:22 AM

Are those Front wheel drive?

btm757 04-03-2010 04:35 PM

Wow That makes me kinda dislike chevy even more

--weezl-- 04-03-2010 04:49 PM

i would go back in there, talk to the owner, or whoever it is, above the general manager, ***** and complain for as long as you can, without letting him say a word, then just as he starts defending themselves, say "you know what, i'm sorry for wasting your time, i am sure the newspaper would much rather hear my complaint than you, and walk out

it will make you feel good, make them feel like crap, if nothing better... and there is a good chance the owner will stop you and offer to fix it for free... you don't even need to go to the paper... you could though, just to warn the rest of the public what horrible service they gave you

btm757 04-03-2010 04:53 PM

Either that or if you complain to General Motors enough they will actually do something to help you out so you wont make them look bad... At least try to get GM for Half.

--weezl-- 04-03-2010 05:40 PM

i doubt GM would really care... in order for this story to make a big enough impact to effect sales, it would have to be worse than toyota's issues... the dealership, however, has a localized customer base...

SVT01RANGER 04-03-2010 06:48 PM

welcome, and for the love of god, i hope that trailer has brakes on it, i wouldn't want to pull anything with my truck that outweighs me with no brakes

rangerboy101 04-03-2010 06:58 PM

That's a nice car. How much did it run you?

morris 04-04-2010 11:22 AM

it sounds like that caddy was beat on. not even 100k and it need timing chains? wtf? sludge, improper maintenance? i hope you got it for a good deal.

oh, welcome and buy a hitch. best investment evah. towing off the bumper like that with that much weight, not a good thing.

sniper_101 04-04-2010 12:20 PM

That picture makes me cringe. Not smart.

Good luck on the car repairs though.

silverstreak4x4 04-04-2010 12:48 PM

Thats a very smart move...

You obviously don't play by the rules in life and your LAUGHABLE attempt to make fun of my common sense is,well,JUST THAT,,,,LAUGHABLE.

--weezl-- 04-04-2010 03:50 PM

yes, make fun of your common sense... you mean that common sense that everyone else knows and everyone else saw while reading this thread, INCLUDING the OP, who stated in his post "do not try this at home" and later saying he only did it to get the car home because he was getting ripped off at the dealership... which shows he knew it was a dumb move

but yes, you are the only one in this thread with any common sense, i do agree
