transferring 2.3 motor
Welcome to the forum
Yes you can, but it will be a harder swap
B2's only came with V6 engines, 2.8l and then 2.9l, 1986 Model Year did have diesel 4cyl(Mitsubishi 2.3l) option but didn't sell well.
You will need the 2.3l and its transmission, 2.8l/2.9l trans won't bolt to 2.3l engine, but.........if manual trans you may be able to find a 2.3l bell housing for the TK or FM V6 transmission
2.3l Computer and its engine wiring harness
The cross brace from the Ranger engine bay for the 2.3ls motor mounts, its not as wide as a V6 so needs a motor mount in the middle.
1990 2.3l is Fuel Injected so needs TWO fuel lines to the gas tank, if B2 had a 2.9l then they will be there, if 2.8l then you will need to add it, and an in tank high pressure fuel pump.
There are many newer and better 4cyl engines than the 2.3l Lima/Pinto engine, it was first used in 1974 Pinto, and used last in 2001 Ranger(as 2.5l) so it is the good reliable engine, just not as powerful or efficient as newer 4cyls which would require the same work to swap.
B2s are pretty heavy, which was why the 2.3l Lima engine was never an option for them, and why the 4 cyl diesel didn't sell well, lack of power was the main complaint
So even if you did the swap I don't think you would be happy with the results, low power and low MPG because of the low power
If you Turbo'ed the 2.3l Lima you might get better results, but cost wise a V8 swap would be better

thanks, have had this ranger about 15 years now. for years was my only ride always started and got me where I needed to making several state wide trips while friends laughed about it. sadly the body is rusting off the frame as rangers do, just thinking of options since the motor still wants to go!!
I would keep an eye out for 1989 to 1994 Ranger with bad 2.3l engine but reasonable body condition
1995-1997 2.3l would be very hard swap, big change in the 2.3l Lima from 1994 to 1995, and of course 2001 to 2012 is not the same 2.3l engine at all
