Hey guys, I'm still looking to buy a ranger, and I came upon this one, Cook Motor Sales - www.cookmotorsales.com
I called to see if the supercharger was aftermarket, which I assume it is, but the lady said she had heard that it was a factory option on it, was is that possible?

Also, do you guys think that's a fair price considering the mods, but it is still an 01 with 100,000 miles?

Also any opinions on the truck overall are welcome too

 

Not possible. NEVER came stock and as you can see, the truck is modded out.

What you're looking at is a Explorer Express supercharger kit(at least that's what it looks like to me)



I would say with what's done to it, their asking price is very reasonable. The same truck STOCK would be about the same asking price. But I will say though...that black front bumper throws a flag to me....it's been replaced which could be a possible past wreck. And having that supercharger, It's safe to assume it's been run hard. That supercharger kit runs about $4500. I wouldn't pay more than 7 for that truck in stock form.

Damn, that thing is sweet, and I usually dislike yellow vehicles. Looks super clean, and if it works as well as it looks, I'd say that's a sweet deal.

Also, does anybody know what brand fender flares those are, I'm not super crazy about them, but I don't think I could take them off, and have the paint match, and possibly have holes?

 

Good looking truck, and the price seems reasonable as long as its not a heap.

+1 on the front bumper being a red flag. In the close up pic of the right fender badge, it looks like the front fender might have been painted before. If you look close you can see the texture on the door is different than the fender. The fender has less texture which can mean that its been colorsanded and buffed.

It doesnt mean that its been hit, and obviously not being there to see it i cant be 100% but if you go check it out take a look at that kind of stuff. Getting the texture of the paint to match the factory stuff is very, very difficult so sometimes inconsistancies are easy to spot. Then fron that you can look over the rest and determine if any work was done and if it was anything serious. Hey it might have been a door ding, or a scratch... not all work has been done because of a 100mph run into a brick wall.

 

Pretty much only one brand makes aftermarket flares for these trucks: Bushwacker. And I don't think Bushwacker makes a flare that requires holes on the body other than on the inside lip(facing the wheel). 3M tape takes care of the bodyside attachment.

So no, there shouldn't be any unsightly holes on the body. Stepsides never came factory with flares. Had it been a styleside, only way to tell in this particular situation, is by pulling a flare and finding out. If stock flares were one it, it's a given to haveholes.

I was thinking too, that is a 3" BL correct?, and what size tires do you think those would be?

 

It's a little too hard to tell from the pics and having those stupid plastic steps on it. But I'm leaning towards a 4" superlift or 4" trailmaster and 33x12.50's. Mostly because you can see the torsion bars peeking out from under those side steps and the engine bay pics don't look bodylifted.

Appears to have an electric fan too.

And surprised no ones noticed....things on two different tires. One side one brand, the other side another brand.

I just noticed the tires are different on either side, but I was thinking about maybe getting a size or 2 bigger to fill out the wheel well a little better, maybe some BFG's, or some MT Baja MTZ's

I agree, that supercharger is a little intriguing (sp?), but my dad made a good point, with 100,000 miles, do you guys think the dealership, and or other shops would work on the motor with a supercharger, I think they probably would, but my dad says, that they probably wouldn't touch it,

What do you guys think?

 

I bet most junior techs wouldn't even hardly notice if the supercharger jumped out and bit them right on the ***, the rest wouldn't care most likely. The only time it'll really become an issue IMHO is if the tranny or engine's pooched and its nearing the end of its warranty. If that were the case than 90% of us would be SOL when it came to any mods we did. I would most DEFINITELY run the VIN and get an outside tech/company to do an unbiased inspection on it (AAA or whoever's the norm down there).

Tell them you're leary of the low miles (for an '01) and the condition of the tranny/engine, and you would like an extended test drive out on the highway and through town. Even offer to throw some gas in yourself if they get funny about it (which would throw warning flags right there), but $20 in fuel just might save you a lot of grief down the road when you find out that the tranny doesn't shift worth a shat, or the rearend's clunking. Check the interior well for signs of normal wear on the pedals, seats, floors, console(s), doors, ect ect. A 100k truck should show some moderate wear marks but for something in that shape not a lot. Feel around under body panels for disturbed panels and possible kinks in the plastic panels or fenders (possible repairs), all the usual stuff. And try not to just fall in love with it before going through it thoroughly - I made that mistake with my last '93 and it turned out to be a nighmare due to unseen frame/underbody rust. It was MINT on the outside and everywhere visible.. Hope this helps some, and good luck with the sale! LR

 

wow i was actually gonna go check this truck out this weekend.

 

I have/had a supercharged 4.0L with 111k miles. I think any dealer would work on it.
