Icon5 What are the differences between automatic and manual locking hubs?

I didn't quite know where else to post this so if this is the wrong section I apologize.

I've never owned a true 4X4 before and since I probably will in the future, I've just got to ask. What are the differences and advantages/disadvantages between automatic and manual locking hubs? Does each tire on a 4X4 have a hub?

Do they ever need to be serviced or replaced? Is one type considered flat out better than the other? If you have manual hubs, is it ok to drive with them activated without using 4WD? I'm actually surprised I never asked this before.

newer Rangers use live axles which are automatic hubs, they are actually stronger than the older ranger front axles which you could put manual hubs on.

manual hubs are better if you are just comparing auto/manual, with a manual hub there are less parts that can go wrong.

Newer vehicles with auto 4x4 use vacuum assist to lock the hubs, my dads went bad on his super duty and replaced them with manual.

Serviced - depends on the type.
Manual hubs you know for a fact that they are engaged or disengaged (or broke )
manual hubs you can engage them and drive all day, week, year - long if you want.
They don't care but your gas mileage will be decreased while engaged due to the extra parts spinning causes drag...

Unless your unique and install manual hubs in the rear you will only have hubs on the front axle...
( Yes, I have manual hubs on front and rear of my Jeep - flat towing it cross country got better gas mileage with the tow vehicle that way)

like the others have said, manual hubs is WAY better in my opinion. i hate my automatic hubs in my 93 ranger. you can engage manual hubs and drive around long distances but it wears them out much faster and is not recommended.

also you know if they are engaged, disengaged or broken.

engaged- you pull the 4wd shifter back and you have 4wd.
disengaged- pull the 4wd shifter and it wont do nothing
broken- like disengaged but with some grinding and clunking

automatic hubs are nice when your crawling into a mud hole or your stuck in one and you need 4wd, you just hit the button and drive out. manual hubs you gotta get out and turn them before you crawl into a mud hole.. haha

You won't be able to just replace the hubs with manual ones, the newer Rangers have live axles.

I wanted to do the same thing but was told I'd have to have the 98 and older axles

A professional locksmith near me repaired both types of locks automatic and manual. In automatic locks, the sensor is installed and manual locks are operated with the help of a key.
