What ranger to get?

Hey guys im new to these forums.. I currently have an 88bronco ii but its acting up and im sick of spending money on it..I would like to buy a used 03 Ranger edge with 4x4 4.0l. What are the most common problems with the newer Rangers? Also I plan on doing some moderate offroading. I found an edge for $11,000 with 50,000 miles on it, is that a good price?

Apopka! Wow you're not far. I hope you're not getting rid of the BII. I LOVE THEM and want one bad! If I were buying one I would get one between 2000 and 2004. Nothing bad about the newer ones but I started disliking the looks after 2004ish. (05's are growing on me...I'm slow :)

Thatas a good looking BII. And you actually did the 4x4 swap! That question is asked all the time but no one ever actually does it. Good Job.

And an 03' 4.0 is a good choice. I haven't had any major issues with mine so far. 02' and earlier sometimes have the timing chain problem. Make sure get the 4.0

No major problems with the SOHC, and 50K isnt a whole lot of miles. As long as you stay with the 4.0 you'll be good

Thanks for the ocmpliments on the bii..the 4wd swap wasnt to hard. Also is the B3000 Mazda the same exact thing as a Ranger? I saw a guy on these forums with one lifted so I assume they are.

Ya lol, well I was reading the post where the guys optima battery exploded and burnt the truck up lol...anyway...is the 3.0l under powered or should I just stick with the 4.0l? I want a 4x4 4.0l Edge or Xlt ext cab,Auto and either black, blue or red..I cant seem to find any dealer with those specs, the only one I found was Carmax and they wanted $15k for an 03..

ball joints, i just changed my upper ones on my 2004 cuz they were really worn out since they are non-greasable. I replaced them with 4x4 sport trak greasable ones. Thats my only problem i've had with my truck with only 28k miles

IAC, Multi Function Switch, (power)window motors went out, 4x4 shift motor cleanings, crappy rubber coating on center bezels, sticky brake caliper slide pins, headlight switch bulb, flimsy arm rest(bucket seat center console), worst shifting auto tranny I've ever owned(at the dealer three times while they scratched their heads), crazy mirrors that have convulsions driving over 50mph....you want me to pull out my warranty repair book of receipts? lol

So why do I want another ranger again???

After 50k miles you'd think that stuff has already been taken care of though. Get a manual tranny if you can drive one or are a fast learner.

That's what I thought. I've always been a ford man. I owned six F150's from 79-86. All bad a$$ tanks. I bought my ranger thinking it wouldn't start nickel and diming me til after the payments, yeah right. Make sure you get a good warranty on that hog. You'll need it.

Yes I am rough on vehicles but it's a truck! I'm not like the guy that idolizes his truck, details it, and avoids dirt. Quite the opposite. If that's what you wanna do buy a damn car. Save some money and the environment.

Everything I ever bought for my truck was the one out of a million off the assembly line with a defect. The last thing I bought proved that very well.

Well, I hope you keep that as your trail sl*t and leave the ranger to the pavement pounding then, lol. They're very capable trucks, don't get me wrong. Just not too tolerant to the things I've thrown at it. Aside from the nitty gritty's I mentioned, my truck was awesome. The auto tranny was the only thing I had real concern over.

hmm wow thats pretty good l2en basically covered every prob I have had LOL and im at 32K. tho, my bezel hasnt peeled, and my 4x4 hasnt needed cleaning yet. tho that driverside mirror still rattles like no tomarrow over 50mph... and at 5500 miles dealer replaced all innards of tranny, shifts ruff on occasion, stalled in reverse at 10K miles... the auto trannys in the newer rangers are total garbage.

Maybe you should look into a 98-02 Ranger, they seem to have the least of problems.. I havent had any of the problems that I2en has had with his.. just balljoints, really.
