? for you guys that drive standard

I have a 2006 2.3l std truck.

What is you sweet spot in shifting?

When i shift at 2000rpm my truck kind of jerks. but when i shift at 2500-3000 it is smooth as butter.

How about you guys?

Do you guys shift at looking at the tach then shift or do you just hear the engine roar then shift?

This is the first truck that has a tach and i find myself looking at the tach to shift, but before i use to just listen to the engine then shift when needed.

if i'm not pushing it i'll shift around 3000.....every once in a while if i shift pre-2500 it'll be a little rough like you're saying, but thats pretty rare...i used to look at the tach when i first got it....but now i've been able to recognize my motor when its at 3000

With the ranger I shifted at 2-2500 but that was with the 3.0L; different powerband than a 2.3L Duratec, with that motor you'll need to shift higher i'd think, as the 3.0L and 4.0L have more torque down low.. my roomate's focus doesnt have a tach (has cheezy arrows instead..lol) and when I drive it I just feel when it needs to be shifted.

D.....I couldn't have said it any better.

I never really use the tach. I usually shift around 2200 or 2500ish around town, fuel efficient. 3000 feels just half right. And D, 4500 feels nice. Only time I really use the tach is when the stereo is too loud, and when I look at the speedo, just glance at the tach.

Every since i got the truck i have been looking at the tach. I have been driving standard for about 8 years now. I have had vehicles without tach, but for some reason i just look. I don't know why. I am i crazy?

I just can't explain it.

I listen to the engine when I'm just cruising around in no hurry. I usually shift around 2000 rpm, nice and smooth.

When I want to take off and wake everyone up, I look at the tach and shift at 4700 rpm.

almost always at 2000-2200 rpm, maybe a little higher in first if i dont want to shift half way thru the intersection. rarely do i romp on it though. although i did the other day to show my buddy what she had from a stop. he was impressed

about 2500 is perfect, 1000 or little under if Im looking short of gas money for the week. 3500 is really pushing it for me, I really see no reason ever to go higher than that.

I agree.. if you are using the tach you don't drive a stick. Well said whoever that was..

Never had a truck with a tach till now. Still don't use it but its nice to know its there I guess??

Ive got a 98 4.0

I shift when it feels right. Usually that ends up being about 2000-2500 during normal driving. I'll punch it sometimes when I'm feeling frisky though...

usually around 3k.........this past week, I took it really easy on the gas, and shifted 2k-3k and got about 26mpg. I usually look at the tach cause I have the radio turned up most of the time so I cant hear the engine.

I have found with mine shifting around 2500 to be the best for acceration and mpg.

I used the tach when I first bought my truck. Gotta know that how the truck feels at the certain RPM's. When I bought my car I used the tach too until I got used to it, but now its all feel. My 4.0 I shifted 3500 usually.

2500-3000 RPM, on a 4.oh the peak torque is at 3000, so I like to keep shifting right in that area, I seem to get the best MPG and acceleration that way.....

My truck lacks a tach but any other car under "normal" driving conditions I usually shift around 3000. With my slow as crap truck I usually just wind it out to what I would guess is around 5000. Good thing I don't have a tack or I would probably be sitting there going "eh its got a little more" and put that much more stress on it
