1988 Ranger ignition cylinder problem
1988 Ranger ignition cylinder problem
Hi all. I have a 1988 ranger that has been giving me a fit with killing batteries. I have bought 4 new batteries plus the one that came with the truck. I have pulled all the fuses 1 at a time, unhooked the radio and put in a new alternator. It was still killing the battery.
When I took the radio out, I opened it up and pulled out the bulb and seen that it was shot. Got a new one and put it in. I was thinking that I'd hook it up just to see if the light would work. It did but the keys weren't in the switch. I found that if you turned the ignition toward the front of the truck, the radio would turn off, then you turn it back toward yourself, it would turn on and the electric windows could be ran up and down.
I went back to the parts store and bought a new ignition cylinder. Got it put in in about 10 minutes and everything went smooth. Without the keys in the switch again, I turned it back toward myself, and the darn radio turned on again.
I hope someone on here has had this problem before and knows how to fix it, as I am tired of hauling these batteries around. Thanks for your time,
Tony

Went by Parts City (forumly Cumberland Auto Parts) today, and one of the guys working there said that he had a 1988 ranger that was the same way as this one, and he fixed it by bending a tab inside the ignition housing (where the cylinder slides into).
I'll report back how it turns out,
Tony

Can someone tell me how to get this peice off the steering colum?

I have gotten the clip ring off the front part, but the whole assembly just won't come off. Please let me know how to do this,
Tony
