2.3L 4 cyl. engine missing now and then
I have a 1994 Ranger 4X2, 2.3L engine, 5 spd. trans. The truck has 295000 miles on it. Every now and then the engine just starts missing and acting like it is running on only 2 cylinders. You can shut it off, and come back a few hours later, and start it up again, and it may still be missing, or it may run fine again for days again, before it starts missing again. There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to why it does this. I have checked the fuel for moisture in the tank, and also have replaced the fuel relay fuse, but nothing seems to work. Can any of you guys out there tell me what to check to try to find the source of the problem? Thanks so much for any advice!!
Fuel pump issue won't cause missing, stalling and no start yes, but not random misfires
1994 was last year for the ICM(ignition control module) on the 2.3l Rangers
It could cause odd misfires or rough running, known issue.
It can be tested at most auto parts stores
ICM runs the spark on a 1994, not the computer, ICM was moved into the computer in 1995 and up models
It is usually located on the front of intake manifold facing fan.
Wires can get loose as well so worth a look and a test
