2.5 Lima ECT

2000 2.5 Lima XLT 2wd
Tried to post elsewhere and well.. I'm still figuring it out. So apologies if I double posted.
I'll summerize:
Check engine light for Coolant Temp Sensor
Diagnosis reveals Severed sensor
order new sensor and receive new sending switch
Attempt to replace sending switch
Sending switch is gray? So I attempt to replace sensor with switch... success
CHAOS

Here's some pics that take all that and info and clarify it some lol (I'm a picture freak when I'm working on stuff so apologies for the excessive pics)

1) My internet diagram is showing the sensor and sender in reversed positions. Should I reverse them in the housing?

2) My sensor is supposed to be gray connector (and was) with appropriate green color. My Sender was supposed to be brown connector (and was) with appropriate red color. The new sender doesn't fit the sender connector but fits (and functions) in the sensor connector. Should I still buy a new sensor or is this a wide band sensor thats safe to use like this? (Functions meaning nothing blew up, I have data streaming still, and no CEL)

3) If I need new can you link the part number!

No, hole placement doesn't matter in this setup, either can go in either hole

ECT sensor is 5volt, only used by computer, it's used to set Choke and air/fuel mix based on coolant temp(grey/red wire)
ETC sender is 12volt, only used by dash board temp gauge(red/white wire)

Connectors are different between the two
Sensor's tend to have cone shaped tip, sender a cylinder shape tip

Okay I'll have to recheck voltage. I've seen the how too so I'll double check that. Hmm. not good news then.

1) my sensor was green wired and my sender was red/white wired (this looks to have been since last service old)

2) my brand new sender only plugs into the sensor wiring.... not good. (Still will recheck voltage as I've seen you stated in another article to confirm) but the plugs are definitely not reversible without breaking a pin connector :/

3) shouldn't I get a circuit high or low for the sensor since its technically a sender in its place atm?

Appreciate it RonD. Been reading through a lot of your helps lol

There should be 2 wires on each in 2000 Ranger
Sensor is gray/red and green/red wires
Sender is red/white and black/white wires
