2.9L Runs rough, but only intermittently
Hello Ranger experts,
I have a 1986 Ranger, 2.9L, that starts up like a champion every time. And about 80% of the time it will idle OK, for an engine with 220,000 miles on it. But the thing runs very rough on the road at times, and by this I mean very randomly, and just as randomly it seems to come out of it and run ok. I have noticed some correlation with this happening in conjunction with acceleration, but nothing that I can state in absolute terms. The rough running seems to be to be almost like it is starved for fuel. I can't pin it down and don't know where to start - I have changed the fuel filter and the fuel pressure regulator. No improvement. Any ideas?

tried the TPS - no dice. A code reader gave me a 25
So, a 25 means Knock Sensor. I have a knock sensor in hand, cannot find the knock sensor on the engine. 2.9L V6 - anyone have a clue where it might be? Does not show up in my repair books.
thanks for your help in advance...
