'95 Ranger temperature gauge does not move, "Check Gauge" lamp lights intermittently

Hi,

I inherited a '95 Ranger XLT from my Dad. It has the 4.0 liter engine and only has about 57,000 original miles on the odo. A year or two ago the temperature gauge stopped working, the needle doesn't budge but once up to operating temperature the "check gauge" red lamp lights occasionally. It usually only stays lit for a few seconds, but it will light intermittently after that. It does not overheat. One mechanic told me that it was the gauge assy in the dash panel, about a $300 repair. Can anyone verify this?

Thanks,
Richard

You mean is the thermostat stuck open? I don't think so, there is plenty of heat in the heater core, and wouldn't the gauge still register? At least it would in the summer time? Engine seems to come up to temperature even in cold weather.
