2001 Courier, Fixing Electric Speedometer Cluster?

Hello from down under,

I have a 2001 PE(?) Ford Courier XL Chassis manual 2wd. It has an electronic VSS in the gearbox that sends a signal up into the dash that drives a motor for the speedo guage.

However, the speedo only intermittently works. I'll be driving along and it will suddenly drop to zero, sometimes it will come back. Lately it's not been working at all though. I've done some research and it seems like it's in the cluster (although most issues seems to be with the gears of the VSS in the gearbox or on the older cable drive type speedos). I took the VSS out of the gearbox and all the plastic gears look A OK. I've also chased the voltage signal back up into the engine bay with a multimeter. I was told by a local mechanic that it's in the cluster. I have a cluster reclaimed out of another vehicle that I will try.

BUT! Is there any way to fix the original cluster? I'd rather this because it's a digital odometer and I cannot reset the milage (?) of the new cluster (which happens to be far higher..... Sigh).
Is it the motor that drives the speedo guage and can you solder in a new one?
Is it something else?
Can I solder the original odometer into the new cluster? Or better yet, reset the new clusters odometer?

I've pulled the original cluster apart as much as I can to see if there is anything obvious. See the photos I've attached of this.

Side note if you're confused: Indonesian assembled Rangers pre 2006 I belive were sold as Ford Couriers in these parts and are very similar to Mazda bt50s I believe.

Thank you very much for your time and help!

Cheers,
Conrad
