2003 fx4 windshield washer wont stop.

One day my windshied washer refused to stop. Took the multi function switch apart and cleaned it but did not help. Decided to replace multi-function switch and they still don't quit. Everything else on truck works fine.Any ideas where to look for short or maybe bad relay?

I don't know where it is but I would be looking for the relay. It should be listed in the Owner's Manual.

well I looked in owners manual found what was supposed to be the right relay, pulled it out and the damm washer pump still runs! Pulled out every other relay and it still runs. Sometimes it would stop for a few seconds then go again. Not much of an electrical wizard but does beining grounded turn pump on?

The pump relay switches the hot side of the pump motor. The ground side is always connected to chassis ground.

The washer motor relay is in the underhood Distribution Box. The relay layout in that box is different from 4-cylinder to V6 so be sure that you are using the correct diagram and looking in the right place for your 4.0L. Also, are you sure that you pulled ALL of the relays? A few are the common Bosch-pattern automotive relay (square) and others are about half that size and rectangular. The washer relay is one of the smaller ones.

Looking at the schematic, it's hard to see how the pump motor can run without the relay in place. The only way I can see is if another hot wire is incorrectly crossed to the pump hot somewhere in the harness. If so, that would be a very unusual problem.

Have to see if I can find a wiring diagram some where.Wiper motor seems to work fine as does everything else, but I am wondering if there could be a short there somewhere. By my owners manual a 56b was the correct relay for my 4.0 which we removed several times. We also pulled and replaced all the relays one at a time but to no avail. A couple times the pump would stop for a second then go again with the relay removed.
