2004 Ranger XLT 4.0 V6 4x4 automatic - was starting every time and then running fine - drove to store, came out to go home - and Ranger wouldn’t start. Had to get towed home! (Big thanks to GEICO).
When turning key to start get just a single click (seems to be coming from accessory relay #25 inside cab?). Dashboard lights all come on. Security system light goes out as expected. Tested starter out of vehicle - cranks as expected and solenoid engages. Carefully cleaned all battery and starter terminals and connectors. Battery fully charged. NOTE: The starter engages but VERY rarely - maybe just one out of 50 tries - and when it does starter turns strongly as expected, engine cranks but NO ignition. I’m at the end of my meager skill set so all suggestions and help will be greatly appreciated.

 

Updated info on my original post: I bought a new Dorman key cylinder without the PATS transponder and installed it. By holding the truck’s current transponder key right next to the ignition halo receiver I can get the Ford PATS security system to get the right security signal and the “padlock” light goes out when key is turned on. AND with this new key and tumbler I can get the starter to crank nearly every time. Strong crank BUT still no go on the engine starting. Help still needed!

When you first turn the key to run, it should turn on, when cranking it should turn off.
