Hi, some of the bulbs on my 2000 Ranger XLT where out on the instrument cluster panel so I took it out and replaced the bad bulbs put it back and than noticed the speedometer wasnt working, so I figured it was one of the connectors that wasnt seating well and took it out again and reconnected everything and naturally now I dont have signal lights or brake lights for that matter...lol is there a relay that controls both these things?

After driving my car for a while I noticed a cel for P0500 which is a VSS so I went ahead and replaced that but still no speedometer!! Did I brake something while removing the panel? I looked closely at the connectors and all the diodes in the back of the cluster nothing seems broken or twisted out of place as far as I can tell!

Does the speedometer need to be reset somehow? any help appreciated, thanks

 

I would start by checking fuses 10 and 26 in the fuse panel at the left end of the dash.

thanks for the reply, the number 26 fuse was blown I replaced it and it immediately blew again!! Is the motor in the speedometer toast? Do I have a short somewhere?

update:

was able to find the diagram for the cluster, checked connector C215 terminal 1 GY/BK wire and connector C216 terminal 7 WH/YE wire, the second one goes to fuse #26, both wires and connectors looked in good shape! I also removed the cluster completely and put another fuse in for fuse #26 and again it blew immediately, so I guess maybe my problem isnt in the cluster! but I cant figure out from the diagram if there is a relay that could be my problem or what else to look for!

Map/dome lights
Instrumentation Dimming Module
Battery Saver Relay
Interior Light Relay
Accessory Delay Relay
4x4 Shift Relay
4x4 Shift Module
Instrument Cluster
Generic Electronic Module
Passive Anti Theft System Module

Most, but not all of these, are fed by light green/orange wires. Some others are fed by white/yellow and a couple by tan/yellow. I would pay particular attention to any wires of these color codes that may have been pinched or cut when the dash work was done.

 

its fixed, thanks to your help. It ended up beeing the dome light! It was burned out and it actually had a crack through the housing itself. I am still not sure why it started to act up right after the cluster change.. and wth ford made that thing effect your speedometer and odometer lol..but just glad it works and I dont have to hunt down another cluster. Oh and the signal lights and brake lights not working ended up being another burned fuse. If I am not mistaken it was number 10.

My lights burned out behind the fuel and temperature gauge, and I have decided that until the speedometer and tachometer lights go out, I won't be replacing them
